Loud Hum from Rear of 2021 Impreza - Wheel Bearing?

Vehicle: 2021 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport

I've noticed a persistent, loud humming noise coming from the rear of my 2021 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport, especially noticeable at speeds above 30 mph. It gets louder when I turn, and seems to be coming from the passenger side rear. The car only has about 45,000 miles on it.

Could this already be a bad wheel bearing? What's the typical lifespan for these, and is this a DIY job or something for the dealership? I thought wheel bearings lasted much longer.

A loud humming noise from the rear that changes with speed and turning is a classic symptom of a failing wheel bearing. While 45,000 miles might seem early for a wheel bearing to fail, it's not unheard of, especially if the vehicle has encountered potholes frequently or if there was a manufacturing defect.

Here's what you need to know:

  1. Symptoms of a Bad Wheel Bearing: The humming or growling noise typically gets louder with speed. It often changes pitch or volume when turning (e.g., if the right rear bearing is bad, it might get louder when turning left, putting more load on that side). You might also feel a slight vibration through the floor or steering wheel.
  2. Lifespan: Wheel bearings typically last 80,000 to 120,000 miles or more. However, factors like driving conditions (rough roads, heavy loads), impact damage (potholes, curbs), and manufacturing quality can significantly shorten their life.
  3. Diagnosis: A mechanic can usually confirm a bad wheel bearing by:
    • Lift and Spin: Lifting the car and spinning the wheel by hand while listening and feeling for roughness.
    • Wiggle Test: Checking for excessive play in the wheel by grabbing it at 12 and 6 o'clock, then 3 and 9 o'clock, and trying to wiggle it.
    • Stethoscope: Using a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint the noise while the wheel is spinning.
  4. Repair Complexity: Replacing a rear wheel bearing on a 2021 Subaru Impreza is generally not a simple DIY job for most home mechanics. It often requires specialized tools like a hydraulic press to remove the old bearing and press in the new one, as the bearing is typically pressed into the hub assembly. Incorrect installation can lead to premature failure or safety issues.
  5. When to See a Shop: You should take your Impreza to a trusted mechanic or Subaru dealership as soon as possible. A failing wheel bearing can eventually seize, leading to loss of control or wheel separation, which is extremely dangerous. Given the complexity, professional installation is highly recommended to ensure safety and proper function.
