Vehicle: 2016 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport

Hello everyone,

I'm hearing a really loud humming noise coming from the front end of my 2016 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport, which has about 95,000 miles. It started subtly a few weeks ago, but now it's very noticeable, especially at speeds above 30 mph. The noise gets louder as I speed up, and it changes pitch slightly when I turn the steering wheel, particularly when turning left.

I'm suspecting a wheel bearing, but I wanted to get some opinions from the community. Is this a common issue for this model year Impreza at this mileage? What's the typical cost for repair, and is it something I should address immediately?

Thanks for your help!

The symptoms you're describing—a loud humming noise that increases with speed and changes pitch when turning—are classic indicators of a failing wheel bearing. This is a relatively common wear item on many vehicles, including Subarus, especially as they approach or exceed 90,000-100,000 miles.

Here's what you need to know and do:

  1. Why Wheel Bearings Fail:
    • Wear and Tear: Wheel bearings are subjected to constant stress from vehicle weight, road impacts, and rotational forces. Over time, the grease inside can break down, or the bearing itself can wear out.
    • Environmental Factors: Exposure to water, salt, and dirt can accelerate wear, especially if the bearing's seal is compromised.
  2. How to Confirm (Professional Diagnosis):
    • Lift and Spin: A mechanic will typically lift the vehicle and spin each wheel by hand, listening for grinding or roughness. They might also check for excessive play in the wheel.
    • Stethoscope Test: Using a mechanic's stethoscope, they can pinpoint the exact wheel bearing that is failing while the vehicle is on a lift or even during a test drive.
    • Road Test: The changing pitch when turning is a strong diagnostic clue. If the noise gets louder when turning left, it often indicates a failing right-side wheel bearing (as more weight shifts to that side).
  3. Importance of Prompt Repair:
    • Safety: A severely worn wheel bearing can eventually seize, potentially causing a wheel to lock up or even separate from the vehicle, which is extremely dangerous.
    • Damage: Continuing to drive on a bad bearing can cause damage to other components, such as the CV axle, brake rotor, or steering knuckle, leading to more expensive repairs.
  4. Repair Considerations:
    • Replacement: Wheel bearings are typically replaced as a complete hub assembly or as a pressed-in bearing, depending on the vehicle design. For your 2016 Impreza, it's often a pressed-in bearing, which requires specialized tools and expertise.
    • Cost: The cost can vary significantly based on labor rates and whether it's a pressed-in bearing or a full hub assembly. Expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $600+ per wheel, including parts and labor. It's often recommended to replace them in pairs on an axle if one side is failing, though not strictly necessary if only one is clearly bad.
  5. When to See a Shop:
    • Immediately: You should schedule an appointment with a trusted mechanic or Subaru dealership as soon as possible. While not an immediate breakdown risk, a failing wheel bearing is a safety concern that should not be ignored. The sooner it's addressed, the safer you'll be, and the less likely you are to incur additional damage.
