2017 Outback CVT Shudder - Is This Normal or a Problem?

Hey everyone, I've got a 2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium with about 85,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed a slight shudder or vibration, especially when accelerating gently from a stop or at lower speeds. It's not constant, but it's definitely noticeable.

I'm a bit worried about the CVT transmission. I've heard mixed things about Subaru CVTs and their long-term reliability. Is this shudder a sign of a bigger problem developing, or is it just a characteristic of these transmissions as they age?

I've kept up with all the regular maintenance, but I haven't had the CVT fluid changed yet. Should I be looking into that, or is there something else I should check? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Summary: For 2017 Outback CVT Shudder - Is This Normal or a Problem?, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
