2018 Outback CVT jerking and hesitating at low speeds

My 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited has started acting really strange lately. When I'm driving at low speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic, the transmission feels like it's jerking or hesitating. It's not a smooth acceleration at all, and sometimes it feels like it's slipping before catching.

It's got about 75,000 miles on it, and I've kept up with all the regular maintenance. I'm worried about the CVT, as I've heard some stories about them. Has anyone else experienced this with their Outback, and what was the fix?

Summary: For 2018 Outback CVT jerking and hesitating at low speeds, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
