Hey everyone, I'm hoping for some advice on my 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited. Lately, I've noticed the rear end seems to sag quite a bit, especially when I have passengers or cargo in the back. It's not just visual; the ride feels a lot softer and almost bouncy.

The bigger concern is a distinct clunking noise coming from the rear suspension, mostly when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It sounds like something is loose or worn out. I've got about 85,000 miles on it.

Could this be worn struts or springs? I'm not sure if it's something I can easily check myself or if it's a definite trip to the shop. Any thoughts or similar experiences with your Outbacks?

Summary: For 2018 Outback Rear Suspension Sag and Clunking Noise, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
