Vehicle: 2022 Subaru WRX Base

Hey guys, I've got a 2022 Subaru WRX Base model, only about 15,000 miles on it. This morning, my ABS light and Traction Control light both came on simultaneously. I pulled out my OBD scanner and it's showing a C0031 code, which points to the Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor circuit.

I haven't hit any major potholes or done anything unusual. The brakes feel normal, but I know these systems are important. Is this a common issue with newer WRXs? What's the best way to troubleshoot this before I take it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An illuminated ABS and Traction Control light, especially with a specific code like C0031 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction), indicates a problem with your vehicle's anti-lock braking system. This is a critical safety system, so prompt attention is advised.

  1. Understanding the Code (C0031):

    • This code specifically points to an issue with the electrical circuit for the left front wheel speed sensor. The ABS module relies on accurate speed readings from each wheel to function correctly. When it loses this data, it disables the ABS and Traction Control systems.
  2. Common Causes:

    • Damaged Wheel Speed Sensor: The sensor itself can fail internally, or its plastic housing can crack, allowing moisture in.
    • Damaged Wiring/Connector: The wiring harness leading to the sensor can be chafed, cut, or corroded. The connector itself can become loose, dirty, or corroded, interrupting the signal.
    • Dirty/Damaged Tone Ring (ABS Ring): The wheel speed sensor reads pulses from a magnetic or toothed tone ring, usually located on the axle shaft or wheel hub. If this ring is dirty, damaged, or has debris stuck to it, the sensor can't get an accurate reading.
    • Wheel Bearing Play: Excessive play in the wheel bearing can cause the tone ring to move too far from the sensor, leading to intermittent or lost signals.
  3. Troubleshooting Steps (if comfortable):

    • Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the left front wheel speed sensor and its wiring. Look for any visible damage to the sensor, cuts or abrasions on the wire, or corrosion/looseness at the connector.
    • Clean the Sensor: Sometimes, road grime or metallic dust can accumulate on the sensor tip, interfering with its reading. Gently clean it with a non-abrasive cleaner.
    • Check Tone Ring: If visible, inspect the tone ring for damage or debris.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If a visual inspection doesn't reveal an obvious issue.
    • If you're not comfortable working with electrical components or disassembling parts of your wheel assembly.
    • A professional can use a multimeter to test the sensor's resistance and voltage, and an oscilloscope to check its signal output. They can also check for continuity in the wiring harness and properly diagnose if the sensor, wiring, or ABS module itself is at fault. Since ABS and Traction Control are disabled, it's safer to have this addressed promptly.
