Premature & Uneven Tire Wear on 2017 WRX - Alignment Issues?

Vehicle: 2017 Subaru WRX Premium

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on my 2017 Subaru WRX Premium. I've noticed that my front tires are wearing out much faster than they should be, specifically on the inner edges. It's pretty severe, and I'm only at about 25,000 miles on these tires.

I also feel like the car might be pulling slightly to the right, though it's subtle. Could this be a classic alignment problem, or should I be looking at other suspension components? I haven't hit any major potholes recently, but the roads around me aren't the best.

Any thoughts or similar experiences with your WRXs would be helpful!

Premature and uneven tire wear, especially on the inner edges of the front tires, combined with a slight pull, are strong indicators of an alignment issue on your 2017 Subaru WRX. The WRX's performance-oriented suspension can be sensitive to alignment changes. However, it's important to rule out other contributing factors.

Here are the common causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Incorrect Wheel Alignment: This is the most likely cause. Inner edge wear typically points to excessive negative camber or toe-out on the front wheels.
    • Negative Camber: The top of the wheel tilts inward. A small amount is normal for handling, but too much will wear the inner edge.
    • Toe-Out: The front of the wheels points outward. This causes scrubbing and inner edge wear.
    • Action: A professional four-wheel alignment is essential. Ensure the shop uses up-to-date equipment and has experience with performance vehicles like the WRX.
  2. Worn Suspension Components: Worn parts can prevent the vehicle from holding an alignment, even if it's set correctly.
    • Ball Joints: Play in the lower ball joints.
    • Tie Rod Ends: Worn inner or outer tie rod ends.
    • Control Arm Bushings: Degraded bushings allow excessive movement.
    • Wheel Bearings: Worn wheel bearings can introduce play.
    • Action: Before an alignment, a technician should inspect all these components for play or damage. Any worn parts must be replaced first.
  3. Tire Pressure: While usually causing more uniform wear across the tread, consistently underinflated tires can sometimes contribute to uneven wear patterns.
    • Action: Regularly check and maintain tire pressure to the manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Bent Suspension Components: Hitting a curb or a severe pothole could bend a control arm, strut, or steering component, which an alignment cannot correct.
    • Action: Visual inspection for bent or damaged parts.

When to See a Shop:

It's critical to address uneven tire wear promptly. Not only does it shorten tire life, but it also affects your WRX's handling, stability, and safety. You should take your car to a reputable shop specializing in alignments. They will:

  • Perform a thorough inspection of all suspension and steering components.
  • Recommend replacement of any worn or damaged parts.
  • Execute a precise four-wheel alignment to factory specifications, correcting camber, caster, and toe angles.

Ignoring this can lead to premature tire replacement and potentially unsafe driving conditions.
