2018 Model 3 Charging Port Not Locking & Intermittent Charging

Hey everyone, I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Lately, when I try to plug in at home or a Supercharger, the charging port often won't lock the cable in. Sometimes it eventually clicks after several tries, but other times it just won't engage at all.

Even when it does lock, I've noticed charging can be intermittent. It'll start, then stop, then start again, or just charge much slower than usual. I've tried different cables and chargers, but the problem persists.

Is this a common issue? Could it be a software glitch, or something mechanical with the charging port itself? Any advice on what I can check before scheduling a service appointment?

Summary: For 2018 Model 3 Charging Port Not Locking & Intermittent Charging, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
