2018 Model 3 Not Charging Properly - Red Light on Port

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with my 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range. For the past few days, when I plug in my mobile connector at home, the charging port light turns red, and the car either charges extremely slowly or not at all. Sometimes it starts charging, but then stops after an hour or so.

I've tried using different outlets and even a public J1772 charger with the adapter, but the problem persists. I've also checked the charging cable for any visible damage, and it looks fine. I'm worried this might be a more serious electrical issue.

Has anyone experienced this with their Model 3? Any tips or tricks before I schedule a service appointment?

Summary: For 2018 Model 3 Not Charging Properly - Red Light on Port, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
