Vehicle: 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range

My 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range recently popped up a "Service Required" message on the screen. Immediately after, I noticed a significant reduction in power, almost like it went into a limp mode. I haven't seen any specific error codes displayed, just the general warning.

I tried restarting the car a couple of times, but the message persists, and the power limitation is still there. It's making daily driving a real challenge.

Has anyone experienced this with their Model 3? What could be causing this, and is there anything I can check myself before scheduling a service appointment?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When your Tesla Model 3 displays a "Service Required" message along with reduced power, it often indicates an issue with a critical powertrain component. This is the vehicle's way of protecting itself from further damage.

Diagnostic Steps & Potential Causes:

  1. Check for Specific Codes: While your screen might show a general message, a Tesla service center or a compatible third-party diagnostic tool can often pull more specific internal diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). These codes are crucial for pinpointing the exact problem.
  2. High Voltage Battery System: Issues with the high voltage battery, its contactors, or the Battery Management System (BMS) can trigger these warnings and limit power. A fault here might be indicated by codes related to voltage imbalances or contactor performance.
  3. Drive Unit Malfunction: A problem with one of the electric drive units (motor, inverter, gearbox) can also cause reduced power and service warnings. This could range from sensor failures to internal component wear.
  4. Cooling System Issues: Overheating in the battery or drive units due to a cooling system fault can force the car into a reduced power state to prevent damage. Check for any coolant leaks or unusual smells.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Service Recommended: Given the reduced power and persistent "Service Required" message, it's highly recommended to schedule service with Tesla as soon as possible. Driving with reduced power can be unsafe and may exacerbate the underlying issue.
  • Specialized Tools Required: Tesla vehicles require specialized diagnostic tools and expertise for high-voltage system repairs. Attempting to diagnose or repair these systems without proper training and equipment can be dangerous.
  • Safety Concern: Any issue affecting the vehicle's power delivery is a significant safety concern. Do not ignore these warnings.
