2020 Model 3 Charging Fault - Slow Charging & Port Issues

My 2020 Model 3 Long Range has been acting up with charging lately. Sometimes it charges super slow, like 5 kW max, even on a Supercharger. It's really frustrating when I'm on a road trip and need a quick top-up.

Other times, the charging port won't latch properly, or it just gives a generic "Charging Fault" message on the screen. I've tried different cables and chargers at various locations, but the problem persists.

Has anyone experienced this with their Model 3? Could it be a port issue, or something more serious with the onboard charger?

Summary: For 2020 Model 3 Charging Fault - Slow Charging & Port Issues, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
