Vehicle: 2020 Tesla Model 3 Long Range

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Tesla Model 3 Long Range. For the past week or so, my home charging has been incredibly slow. I'm using my Tesla Wall Connector, which used to charge at full speed without any problems.

Now, it's taking ages to add just a few miles, and sometimes I wake up to find that charging stopped completely overnight. I've tried unplugging and replugging, and even restarting the car, but the problem persists. The Wall Connector lights seem normal.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a software glitch, or something more serious with the car's charging system or even the Wall Connector itself? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Slow or interrupted home charging on a Tesla, especially with a Wall Connector, can be frustrating but often has a few common culprits. Here’s a troubleshooting guide:

  1. Check Wall Connector Status:

    • Observe the LED lights on your Wall Connector. A solid green light indicates it's ready, while flashing green patterns can indicate various states or errors. Consult your Wall Connector manual for specific flash codes.
    • Ensure the Wall Connector's circuit breaker in your home's electrical panel hasn't tripped. A tripped breaker would cut power entirely.
  2. Inspect Charging Port and Cable:

    • Carefully examine your Model 3's charging port for any debris, moisture, or bent pins.
    • Check the Wall Connector cable and connector for any visible damage, cuts, or signs of wear.
  3. Test with a Different Charger/Location:

    • Try charging at a different Supercharger or a public Level 2 charger. If the car charges normally elsewhere, the issue likely lies with your home setup (Wall Connector or house wiring).
    • If possible, try using a different Tesla Mobile Connector (if you have one) at home, plugged into a different high-power outlet, to rule out the Wall Connector itself.
  4. Restart Vehicle and Wall Connector:

    • Perform a soft reset of your Tesla by holding down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the screen reboots.
    • For the Wall Connector, you can try cycling its power by flipping the dedicated circuit breaker off for 30 seconds, then back on.

Potential Causes:

  • Wall Connector Fault: Internal component failure, or a software glitch within the Wall Connector itself.
  • Vehicle Charging Port/Module Issue: Damage to the car's charging port, or a fault in the onboard charger or Battery Management System (BMS).
  • Home Electrical System: A loose connection in your home's wiring leading to the Wall Connector, or an intermittent issue with the circuit breaker.
  • Software Glitch: Less common for persistent hardware-like symptoms, but a vehicle software bug could potentially affect charging protocols.

When to See a Shop: If after performing these steps the problem persists, especially if you've ruled out your home electrical system and the Wall Connector by testing with other chargers, it's time to schedule service with Tesla. They have proprietary diagnostic tools that can pinpoint issues with the vehicle's charging system or the Wall Connector. While there isn't a standard OBD-II code for this specific issue on a Tesla, their internal diagnostics will log any relevant faults. Mention all the troubleshooting steps you've already taken when you contact them.
