Vehicle: 2022 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus

Hi Tesla fam,

My 2022 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus is due for new wiper blades. The current ones are streaking pretty badly, especially in light rain. I've heard it's a straightforward DIY, but I'm also experiencing some weird behavior with the auto-wipers – sometimes they go crazy when there's barely any rain, and other times they're too slow.

Are the wiper blades easy to swap out? And could the streaking blades be causing the auto-wiper sensor to misbehave, or is that a separate issue? Any tips for the replacement process or troubleshooting the auto-wipers would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Replacing wiper blades on your 2022 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus is indeed a straightforward DIY task and is crucial for maintaining clear visibility. The erratic behavior of your auto-wipers could potentially be related to worn blades or a dirty windshield/sensor area.

Causes of Streaking & Auto-Wiper Issues:

  1. Worn Wiper Blades: The rubber on wiper blades degrades over time due to UV exposure, temperature changes, and use, leading to streaking, chattering, or skipping.
  2. Dirty Windshield/Sensor: Dirt, grime, or even wax buildup on the windshield, particularly around the rain sensor (located near the rearview mirror), can interfere with its ability to accurately detect rain.
  3. Software Glitch: Less commonly, a software bug can cause erratic auto-wiper behavior.

Step-by-Step Wiper Blade Replacement Guide:

  1. Enter Wiper Service Mode: On your Tesla's touchscreen, navigate to Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode (or similar, depending on software version). This will position the wipers vertically, making them accessible and preventing damage to the hood.
  2. Lift Wiper Arm: Gently lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks into its upright position. Be careful not to let it snap back down against the glass.
  3. Remove Old Blade: Locate the small tab or button on the wiper blade where it connects to the arm. Press or slide this tab to release the old blade, then slide it off the arm.
  4. Install New Blade: Slide the new wiper blade onto the arm's hook until it clicks securely into place. Ensure it's fully seated.
  5. Lower Wiper Arm: Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield. Repeat for the other wiper.
  6. Exit Wiper Service Mode: Exit service mode on the touchscreen. The wipers will return to their parked position.

Troubleshooting Auto-Wipers:

  1. Clean Windshield: Thoroughly clean your windshield, especially the area around the rearview mirror where the rain sensor is located. Use a glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Avoid car waxes or coatings on this specific area, as they can sometimes interfere with the sensor.
  2. Inspect Sensor: Visually inspect the rain sensor itself for any obstructions or damage.
  3. Software Update: Ensure your Tesla's software is up to date. Sometimes, software updates include improvements to sensor calibration and functionality.

When to See a Shop: If new wiper blades and a clean windshield don't resolve the auto-wiper issues, or if you suspect physical damage to the rain sensor, it might indicate a sensor malfunction. In this case, schedule a service appointment with Tesla. They can run diagnostics on the sensor and replace it if necessary.
