Vehicle: 2016 Tesla Model S P90D

Hi all, I'm having an issue with my 2016 Tesla Model S P90D. The driver's side door handle, which is supposed to auto-present, has stopped working reliably. Sometimes it pops out, sometimes it doesn't, and I have to push it or use the key fob to get it to extend. It's become quite annoying, especially when it's raining.

The other handles seem to be fine. I've tried a soft reset and a hard reset of the car, but no luck. I'm wondering if it's a sensor issue, a motor problem, or maybe something with the wiring inside the door.

Has anyone else experienced this with their older Model S? What was the fix? Is this something I can troubleshoot myself or does it definitely need a service appointment?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The auto-presenting door handles on older Tesla Model S vehicles are a common point of concern related to electrical and mechanical components. Here's what's typically involved:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Motor Failure: The small electric motor responsible for extending and retracting the handle can wear out over time. This is a very common failure point.
    • Wiring Harness Issues: Over time, the wiring inside the door panel, particularly where it flexes, can fray or develop breaks, leading to intermittent power or signal to the handle motor or sensor.
    • Sensor Malfunction: The handle contains sensors that detect when you approach or touch it. If these sensors fail, the handle won't know when to present.
    • Debris/Obstruction: While less likely if it's intermittent, physical debris inside the handle mechanism can impede its movement.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps (Limited DIY):

    • Lubrication (Temporary Fix): Some owners have reported temporary success by gently applying a silicone-based lubricant to the handle mechanism, but this usually addresses stiffness, not an electrical failure.
    • Soft/Hard Reset: As you've done, vehicle resets can sometimes clear minor electronic glitches, but often won't fix a hardware problem.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Given the intermittent nature and your troubleshooting, it's highly probable this is a hardware issue with the handle assembly itself (motor, sensor, or internal wiring).
    • Tesla Service is Recommended: Replacing a Model S door handle is a complex procedure that involves removing the door panel, disconnecting electrical connectors, and carefully installing the new assembly. It's best performed by trained technicians to avoid further damage to the door or its components.

Diagnostics: Tesla service can connect to the vehicle's diagnostic system and pull specific Body Control Module (BCM) codes related to door functions. While there isn't one universal OBD-II code, they might see codes like:

  • B1XXX series codes: Related to specific door modules or components (e.g., B1220 - Door Handle Motor Fault).
  • UXXXX series codes: Indicating communication errors between modules, if the handle's control module isn't communicating properly.
