Vehicle: 2017 Tesla Model S 75D

Hi all,

I've been hearing a noticeable clunking or rattling sound coming from the front end of my 2017 Tesla Model S 75D, especially when going over bumps or uneven road surfaces. It's become more pronounced lately and is quite concerning.

The sound seems to be coming from both sides, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly. It's not a constant noise, only when the suspension is articulating. I've checked the frunk for loose items, but that's not it.

Could this be a common issue with older Model S vehicles? I'm worried about potential safety implications. Any ideas on what components might be failing or what I should have checked?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension of a 2017 Tesla Model S is a common complaint and often points to wear in specific suspension components. The Model S, being a heavy vehicle, can put significant stress on these parts over time.

Common Causes:

  1. Control Arm Bushings/Ball Joints: These are very common culprits. The bushings (especially the upper and lower control arm bushings) can wear out, leading to play and clunking noises. Ball joints can also develop play.
  2. Sway Bar End Links: The end links connect the sway bar to the suspension. Worn or loose end links are a frequent source of rattling or clunking sounds over bumps.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the struts can wear out, causing noise. If your Model S has air suspension, the air struts themselves can also develop issues, though a clunk is more often a mechanical wear item.
  4. Tie Rod Ends: Inner or outer tie rod ends can wear, leading to play and noise, often accompanied by loose steering feel.

What You Can Do:

  1. Visual Inspection: While difficult without lifting the car, a quick visual check for obvious damage or leaks around the suspension components might reveal something. Look for cracked rubber bushings or grease leaking from ball joint boots.
  2. Professional Diagnosis: This type of noise almost always requires a professional inspection. A technician will lift the vehicle and perform a 'shake test' on various suspension components to identify play. They will also check for any diagnostic codes related to the air suspension system if applicable.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. Suspension noises, especially clunking, indicate worn components that can affect steering, handling, and safety. Delaying repair can lead to further damage to other parts or, in severe cases, component failure.
  • Request a thorough inspection of all front suspension components, specifically mentioning control arm bushings, ball joints, sway bar end links, and tie rod ends. A Tesla Service Center or a reputable independent shop experienced with Teslas will have the necessary expertise and tools.
