Vehicle: 2019 Tesla Model X Long Range

Hey fellow Model X owners,

My 2019 Tesla Model X Long Range has started having really streaky wipers, especially on the driver's side. It's getting pretty annoying and affects visibility, especially in light rain. I think it's time for new wiper blades.

What are the best replacement wiper blades for the Model X? Should I stick with OEM from Tesla, or are there good aftermarket options that perform just as well or better? Also, what kind of washer fluid should I use? Can I just use any standard blue fluid, or does Tesla recommend something specific for their system? Thanks for any recommendations!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Streaky wipers are a common issue indicating worn-out wiper blades, which can significantly impair visibility and safety. Replacing them is a straightforward maintenance task for your 2019 Tesla Model X Long Range.

Causes of Streaky Wipers:

  • Worn Rubber: The rubber on the wiper blades hardens, cracks, or tears over time due to sun exposure, temperature changes, and use.
  • Contamination: Dirt, grime, or wax buildup on the windshield or blades can cause streaking.
  • Improper Angle: The wiper arm might be bent, causing the blade to not make even contact with the windshield.

Wiper Blade Replacement & Washer Fluid:

  1. Wiper Blade Type:
    • OEM Tesla Blades: These are designed specifically for your Model X and generally offer excellent performance and fit. You can purchase them directly from Tesla Service or their online store.
    • Aftermarket Beam Blades: Many high-quality aftermarket brands (e.g., Bosch Icon, Rain-X Latitude, PIAA) offer beam-style blades that fit the Model X. These often perform very well and can sometimes be more readily available or cost-effective. Ensure you get the correct lengths for both driver and passenger sides (check your owner's manual or measure existing blades).
  2. Service Mode: Before attempting to replace the blades, put your Model X into 'Wiper Service Mode' via the touchscreen (Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode). This raises the wipers to a vertical position, preventing them from snapping back onto the windshield and potentially damaging it.
  3. Replacement Steps:
    • Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.
    • Locate the small tab or button on the wiper blade where it connects to the arm. Press it and slide the old blade off.
    • Slide the new blade onto the arm until it clicks securely into place.
    • Gently lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
    • Exit Wiper Service Mode.
  4. Washer Fluid:
    • You can generally use any high-quality, non-abrasive, all-season windshield washer fluid.
    • Important: If you live in a cold climate, ensure the fluid has adequate freeze protection to prevent the reservoir and lines from freezing.
    • Avoid using plain water, as it can freeze and doesn't clean as effectively.
    • The washer fluid reservoir is typically located in the frunk. Open the cap and fill to the 'MAX' line.

When to See a Shop:

  • If new wiper blades still result in streaking or poor clearing, there might be an issue with the wiper motor, arm, or linkage.
  • If the washer fluid pump isn't working, or fluid isn't spraying, a service center can diagnose and repair the pump or clogged lines.
  • No specific OBD codes are typically associated with worn wiper blades or low washer fluid, but a fault in the wiper motor or washer pump could trigger diagnostic alerts.
