Vehicle: 2018 Tesla Model X 100D

Hey fellow Tesla owners,

My 2018 Tesla Model X 100D has been giving me some grief with streaky windshield wipers lately. It's not just a little bit; it's significant streaking that makes driving in rain quite annoying and sometimes unsafe. I've tried cleaning the blades, but it hasn't really helped.

I'm looking to replace the wiper blades, but I'm wondering if there are any specific brands or types that work best with the Model X's large windshield and unique wiper system. Also, what kind of washer fluid do you all recommend? Is there anything special for Teslas, or is any good quality fluid fine? And where's the washer fluid reservoir located on the Model X?

Any DIY tips for replacement or fluid top-off would be greatly appreciated!

Streaky wipers on your 2018 Tesla Model X are a common annoyance and a clear sign that your wiper blades need replacement. The Model X's large windshield and specific wiper arm design benefit from quality blades.

Causes of Streaky Wipers:

  • Worn Rubber: Over time, the rubber on wiper blades hardens, cracks, or tears due to UV exposure, temperature changes, and use.
  • Contamination: Dirt, grime, tree sap, or wax buildup on the windshield or blades can cause streaking.
  • Improper Angle: The wiper arm itself might be bent, causing uneven pressure.

Wiper Blade Recommendations: While Tesla sells OEM blades, many owners find success with aftermarket beam-style blades from reputable brands like Bosch ICON, PIAA Super Silicone, or Michelin Stealth. Ensure you get the correct lengths for your Model X (typically 28" for the driver's side and 18" for the passenger's side, but always double-check your owner's manual or measure your existing blades).

Washer Fluid: Any good quality, all-season windshield washer fluid designed for automotive use is suitable for your Tesla. Look for fluids that offer:

  • Bug-removing properties: Helpful for highway driving.
  • Rain-repellent additives: Can improve visibility.
  • Anti-freeze properties: Essential if you live in a cold climate. Avoid using plain water, as it can freeze and doesn't clean effectively.

Washer Fluid Reservoir Location (Model X): The washer fluid reservoir on the Model X is typically located under the frunk (front trunk), on the passenger side. You'll need to open the frunk, and the fill neck with a blue cap should be visible.

DIY Wiper Blade Replacement Steps:

  1. Enter Service Mode: On your Model X touchscreen, navigate to Controls > Service > Wiper Service Mode. This will position the wipers vertically for easy access.
  2. Lift Wiper Arm: Gently lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks into place.
  3. Remove Old Blade: Locate the small tab or button on the wiper arm where the blade connects. Press it and slide the old blade off the J-hook or pin.
  4. Install New Blade: Slide the new blade onto the wiper arm until it clicks securely into place. Ensure it's fully seated.
  5. Lower Wiper Arm: Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
  6. Exit Service Mode: Turn off wiper service mode on the touchscreen.

When to See a Shop: If new blades and fresh fluid don't resolve the streaking, or if you notice any unusual noises or movements from the wiper arms, it might indicate an issue with the wiper motor or linkage. In such cases, a Tesla Service Center should diagnose the problem. This is a very easy DIY (2/10).
