Vehicle: 2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range

I've been having a frustrating issue with my 2021 Model Y Long Range. Occasionally, the driver's side door handle won't present itself when I approach the car, and I have to manually push it out.

More concerning is that the driver's window sometimes doesn't fully close when I shut the door, or it re-opens slightly after closing. This has led to some phantom drain on the battery, I think, as the car seems to be "awake" trying to resolve it.

I've tried a soft reset and checking for obstructions, but no luck. Is this a common problem for Model Ys, and what's the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Recalibrate Windows: Try recalibrating the windows. Sit in the driver's seat, close all doors. Roll the window all the way down, then hold the down button for a few extra seconds. Then roll it all the way up, and hold the up button for a few extra seconds. Repeat for all affected windows.
  2. Check for Obstructions: Even small debris in the window channel or around the door handle mechanism can cause issues. Thoroughly clean these areas.
  3. Door Handle Mechanism: The door handle not presenting can sometimes be due to a sticky mechanism or a failing microswitch. Lubricating the pivot points with a dry lubricant (like PTFE spray) can sometimes help, but be careful not to get it on paint.
  4. Software Glitch: Ensure your vehicle's software is fully updated. These types of intermittent issues can sometimes be resolved with a software patch.
  5. Phantom Drain: If the window isn't fully closing, the car's systems might remain active, leading to phantom drain. Check your Tesla app for "Sentry Mode" or "Cabin Overheat Protection" settings, as these can also contribute to drain.
  • When to See a Shop: If recalibration and cleaning don't resolve the issue, or if the problem is persistent, you should schedule a service appointment. Tesla service can diagnose the door handle mechanism, window motor, and associated sensors. They have specific diagnostic tools to check the door controller module and window regulator. While there isn't a generic OBD-II code for this, Tesla's internal diagnostics can log faults related to door and window operation. This is a known, though not universal, issue for some Model Y and Model 3 vehicles, often requiring adjustment or replacement of the door handle assembly or window regulator.
