Vehicle: 2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range

Hi all,

My 2021 Tesla Model Y Long Range recently popped up with a "Service Required" message on the screen. The weird thing is, the car seems to drive normally otherwise, but I've noticed a significant reduction in regenerative braking effectiveness.

It feels like I have to use the physical brakes much more often than before, and the car doesn't slow down nearly as much when I lift off the accelerator. There are no other warning lights or strange noises, just this alert and the weak regen.

Could this be a battery issue, or something with the motor? I'm trying to figure out if it's safe to drive to a service center or if I should get it towed. Any insights would be appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A "Service Required" message coupled with weak regenerative braking on your 2021 Tesla Model Y is a significant diagnostic clue. Regenerative braking relies heavily on the electric motors and the high-voltage battery system, so issues in either can affect its performance.

  1. Understand Regenerative Braking: Regen braking converts kinetic energy back into electrical energy to recharge the battery. Its effectiveness can be reduced by several factors, including a cold battery (though usually indicated by a snowflake icon) or a full battery (also indicated on screen). If neither of these is present, it points to a fault.

  2. Potential Causes:

    • Battery Management System (BMS) Fault: The BMS might detect an issue with the battery pack that limits its ability to accept a charge, thus reducing regen braking. This could be a cell imbalance or other internal battery health issue.
    • Motor or Inverter Issue: The electric motors are responsible for both propulsion and regenerative braking. A fault in one of the motors or their associated inverter units could directly impact regen performance.
    • High Voltage System Fault: Any issue within the high-voltage system that affects power flow to or from the battery could manifest as reduced regen.
    • Brake System Integration: While less common, a fault in the blended braking system (where regen works with friction brakes) could cause the car to rely more on friction braking, making regen feel weaker.
    • Software Anomaly: A software glitch could misinterpret sensor data or incorrectly limit regen, though a "Service Required" message usually points to a hardware or significant system fault.
  3. When to See a Shop: A "Service Required" message should always be taken seriously. While the car might seem to drive normally, the underlying issue could escalate. You should:

    • Contact Tesla Service Immediately: Use your Tesla app to schedule a service appointment and provide a detailed description of the symptoms. They can often perform remote diagnostics to get a preliminary idea of the fault codes.
    • Assess Driving Safety: If the car is otherwise driving predictably and you can safely use the friction brakes, you might be able to drive it to the service center. However, be extra cautious and allow for longer stopping distances. If you notice any other unusual behavior, consider having it towed.
