Vehicle: 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance

Hey Tesla community,

I'm experiencing frustratingly slow charging speeds with my 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance, both at Superchargers and my home Wall Connector. Normally, at a V3 Supercharger, I'd see speeds well over 150 kW, but lately, I'm barely hitting 70-80 kW, even with a low state of charge (under 20%). At home, my 48A Wall Connector used to give me around 10 kW, but now it's stuck around 6-7 kW.

I've checked the charging cables, and they seem fine. The charging port is also clean. There are no explicit error messages, just a persistent 'Charging speed reduced' notification on the screen. The battery preconditioning seems to be working as usual before Supercharging. The ambient temperature has been moderate, so it's not extreme cold or heat.

Could this be a software issue, or is it indicative of a problem with the car's charging system or battery? Has anyone with a 2022 Model Y seen similar behavior? Any tips on what to troubleshoot or look for?

Slow charging speeds, especially with a 'Charging speed reduced' message, can be frustrating and point to several potential issues with your 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. It's important to understand that charging speed is influenced by many factors, but a significant, consistent drop suggests a problem.

  1. Check Charging Port and Cable: Thoroughly inspect your vehicle's charging port for any debris, moisture, or damage. Do the same for your Supercharger cable (if you noticed it at multiple stations) and your home Wall Connector cable. Even minor damage can reduce conductivity.
  2. Verify Charger Output: If possible, try different Supercharger stalls and different home charging setups (e.g., a friend's Wall Connector, or a public Level 2 charger) to isolate if the issue is with your car or specific charging infrastructure.
  3. Review On-Screen Charging Details: When charging, tap the charging icon on your screen. Look at the detailed information provided: current voltage, amperage, and power. Note if any messages appear there.
  4. Software Update: Ensure your Tesla's software is completely up to date. Charging algorithms are constantly refined, and sometimes updates can resolve performance issues.
  5. Battery Preconditioning: While you mentioned it seems to be working, double-check that your navigation is set to a Supercharger well in advance (at least 20-30 minutes) to allow the battery to reach optimal temperature for fast charging. For home charging, ensure the battery isn't extremely cold.

Common Causes for Reduced Charging Speed:

  • Battery Temperature: The most common reason for reduced charging. If the battery is too cold or too hot, the car will limit charging speed to protect the battery. Even with preconditioning, an underlying issue could prevent optimal temperature.
  • Degraded 12V Battery: A weak 12V auxiliary battery can sometimes cause various electrical systems, including the charging controller, to malfunction or operate sub-optimally.
  • Charging Port/Inlet Issues: Damage, corrosion, or debris in the charging port can restrict power flow.
  • On-Board Charger (OBC) Fault: For AC (Level 2) charging, a fault with the car's internal On-Board Charger can limit speeds. This wouldn't typically affect DC (Supercharger) speeds as much.
  • High Voltage Battery Degradation/Fault: While less common for a sudden drop, significant degradation or a fault within the main high-voltage battery pack can lead to the car limiting charging speeds as a protective measure.
  • Charging Cable/Station Fault: Although you've checked, sometimes the issue lies with the specific Supercharger stall or your home Wall Connector itself.

When to See a Shop: If you've systematically ruled out external factors (charging stations, cables) and confirmed your software is updated, and the 'Charging speed reduced' message persists across different charging types and conditions, it's time to schedule a service appointment with Tesla. A significant, consistent reduction in charging speed could indicate an issue with the vehicle's battery management system (BMS), the high-voltage battery itself, or the charging port/inlet, all of which require specialized diagnostics and repair by Tesla technicians.
