Vehicle: 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range

Hi all, my 2022 Model Y Long Range has been giving me grief with its Autopilot system. For the past week, I keep getting 'Autopilot features temporarily unavailable' warnings, and sometimes 'Cameras unavailable' messages pop up on the screen. It's really frustrating because these features are a big part of why I got the car.

I've tried doing a soft reset (two scroll wheels) and even a power cycle, but the warnings keep coming back, especially after driving for a bit or when it's humid. The cameras seem clean from the outside, and there's no visible damage.

Could this be a software glitch, or is there a hardware problem with one of the cameras or the Autopilot computer itself? What should I be looking for? Is there a way to check diagnostic codes without a service appointment?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing 'Autopilot unavailable' and 'Cameras unavailable' warnings on a relatively new 2022 Model Y is definitely concerning, as these features rely heavily on the vehicle's electrical and electronics systems, specifically the camera suite and Autopilot computer.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Environmental Factors: While you mentioned the cameras seem clean, even minor condensation, fog, or heavy rain can temporarily obscure a camera's view, triggering these warnings. Ensure all camera lenses (front, pillars, rear, side repeaters) are spotless and dry, especially in humid conditions.
  2. Software Glitch: It's possible a recent software update introduced a bug, or an update failed to install correctly. Ensure your vehicle is running the latest software version. Sometimes, persistent issues can be resolved with a re-installation of the firmware by Tesla service.
  3. Camera Module Failure: One or more of the vehicle's eight external cameras could be malfunctioning. While they might look fine externally, internal electronic failures can occur. This would require a diagnostic from Tesla to identify which specific camera is at fault.
  4. Autopilot Computer (HW3/HW4) Issue: The 'brain' of the Autopilot system is the computer. If it's experiencing an internal fault or losing communication with the cameras, it will disable the features. This is a more serious hardware issue. Tesla's internal diagnostic codes, such as DI_w036 (Autopilot computer error) or DI_w007 (Camera obstruction/fault), would indicate a specific problem.
  5. Wiring or Connector Issues: Less common, but a loose or damaged wiring harness or connector to a camera or the Autopilot computer could cause intermittent failures.

When to see a shop:

Since you've already performed soft resets and checked for external obstructions, and the problem persists, it's time to schedule a service appointment with Tesla. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read the specific internal fault codes and determine if it's a software issue, a faulty camera, or a problem with the Autopilot computer itself. Driving with these warnings means critical safety features are compromised.
