Vehicle: 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance

Hey everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance. For the past few weeks, my home charging speed has dropped significantly. I use a Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3) on a 240V/60A circuit, which used to charge at a consistent 48A (around 44 miles/hour).

Now, it's often charging at only 16A or 32A, and sometimes even drops lower or pauses completely. I've checked the Wall Connector, and the lights seem normal. I've also tried restarting the car and checking the charging settings in the app and on the car's screen – everything looks correct.

Could this be an issue with the car's onboard charger, or maybe the battery management system? I haven't had any issues with Supercharging, which seems to work fine. Any ideas before I schedule a service appointment?

Slow or inconsistent home charging on your 2022 Tesla Model Y Performance can be very frustrating, especially when you're used to faster speeds. Since Supercharging works fine, it points towards an issue specific to AC charging or your home setup. Here's a troubleshooting guide:

  1. Check Your Home Charging Setup:

    • Wall Connector Status: Observe the LED pattern on your Wall Connector. Refer to the manual for error codes (e.g., red blinks). A solid green usually means it's ready, but a specific pattern might indicate an internal fault.
    • Circuit Breaker: Ensure the circuit breaker for your Wall Connector hasn't tripped or isn't faulty. A loose connection at the breaker or outlet can also cause reduced current.
    • Other Appliances: Check if other high-draw appliances on the same circuit (if any) are causing voltage drops, though a dedicated 60A circuit should prevent this.
  2. Vehicle-Side Checks:

    • Charging Settings: Double-check the charging current limit in your car's touchscreen (Controls > Charging) and in the Tesla app. Ensure it's set to the maximum allowed by your Wall Connector (48A in your case).
    • Scheduled Charging/Departure: Make sure you don't have any scheduled charging or departure times enabled that might be overriding your immediate charging needs.
    • Software Updates: Ensure your Model Y has the latest software update. Bugs related to charging control can sometimes be resolved with updates.
    • Charging Port: Inspect the charging port on your vehicle for any debris, damage, or moisture that might interfere with the connection.
  3. Potential Vehicle Component Issues:

    • Onboard Charger (OBC): Since Supercharging (DC) works fine, but AC charging is slow, the onboard charger is a prime suspect. The OBC converts AC power from your home into DC power for the battery. A fault here would limit AC charging speed.
    • Battery Management System (BMS): The BMS controls all aspects of battery charging and discharging. A fault in the BMS could incorrectly limit charging current or cause pauses.
    • Charging Cable/Adapter: Although you're using a Wall Connector, if you ever use a mobile connector, ensure it's not the issue.
  4. When to See a Shop (Tesla Service Center):

    • Persistent Issue: If, after checking your home setup and car settings, the slow charging persists, it's time to schedule a service appointment.
    • Diagnostic Codes: Tesla service can run advanced diagnostics to check the health of your onboard charger and BMS. They can identify specific internal error codes (similar to OBD codes in ICE vehicles) that point directly to the faulty component.
    • Warranty: Your 2022 Model Y Performance is well within its basic vehicle limited warranty (4 years or 50,000 miles) and battery/drive unit warranty (8 years or 120,000 miles). This issue should be covered.
