Vehicle: 2018 Toyota Camry XSE

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2018 Toyota Camry XSE. Recently, both the ABS and Traction Control lights came on simultaneously on my dashboard. It's been like this for about a week now.

Occasionally, when I'm braking at lower speeds, I hear a slight grinding noise, almost like the ABS is engaging unnecessarily, even on dry pavement. The car still stops, but it feels a bit off.

I've checked the brake fluid level, and it seems fine. I haven't noticed any major changes in braking performance otherwise, but those lights are definitely concerning. Has anyone experienced this with their Camry or another Toyota model? Any ideas on what might be causing it before I take it to a shop? I'm hoping it's something simple.

It sounds like you're dealing with a common issue related to your vehicle's wheel speed sensors or the ABS system itself. The simultaneous illumination of the ABS and Traction Control lights almost always points to a fault within this system, as they are interconnected.

Possible Causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most common culprit. A sensor can become dirty, damaged, or fail electronically, sending incorrect signals to the ABS module. This can trigger the lights and cause the ABS to activate prematurely, leading to the grinding noise you hear.
  2. Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: These rings are part of the axle and work with the speed sensors. If a ring is cracked or corroded, the sensor can't get an accurate reading.
  3. Wiring Harness Issues: Damage to the wiring leading to the wheel speed sensors can interrupt communication.
  4. ABS Module Malfunction: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail.

Diagnostics:

Your vehicle likely has stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Common OBD-II codes for this issue include:

  • C0200-C0230: (Specific to Toyota) Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction (e.g., C0200 for front right, C0205 for front left, etc.)
  • P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction (though this is more generic and might not be the primary ABS sensor)

When to See a Shop:

While the car still stops, a compromised ABS/Traction Control system can reduce your vehicle's safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions. It's recommended to have this inspected by a qualified technician as soon as possible. They will:

  1. Scan for diagnostic codes to pinpoint the exact sensor or system fault.
  2. Inspect all four wheel speed sensors and their wiring for damage or debris.
  3. Check the condition of the ABS reluctor rings.
  4. Perform a visual inspection of the brake system components.

Driving with these lights on is not ideal, as you've lost some critical safety features designed to prevent skidding and maintain control.
