Vehicle: 2019 Toyota Camry SE

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing some really rough shifting in my 2019 Toyota Camry SE lately, especially when I'm driving at lower speeds or in stop-and-go traffic. It feels like the transmission is hesitating to engage, and then it clunks into gear. It's most noticeable between 1st and 2nd, and sometimes 2nd and 3rd.

There's no check engine light on, but the car just doesn't feel as smooth as it used to. I'm worried this could be a major transmission issue. Has anyone else experienced this with their Camry of a similar year? What could be causing this?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealer.

Rough shifting and hesitation in a 2019 Toyota Camry SE, even without a Check Engine Light (CEL), can indicate several potential issues with the transmission or its control system. Here's a breakdown of common causes and recommended steps:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition:

    • Cause: Low or degraded transmission fluid is a common culprit. Old fluid loses its lubricating properties and can cause internal components to wear prematurely, leading to rough shifts. Toyota's WS (World Standard) fluid is designed for long life, but it's not eternal.
    • Action: While many modern transmissions are 'sealed for life,' checking the fluid level and condition (color, smell) is crucial. This often requires specific tools and procedures, so a professional inspection is recommended.
  2. Transmission Solenoid Issues:

    • Cause: Solenoids are electronic valves that control the flow of transmission fluid, directing it to engage different gears. If a solenoid is sticking or failing, it can cause delayed or harsh shifts.
    • Diagnostics: A diagnostic scan, even without a CEL, might reveal pending or stored transmission-specific codes (e.g., P07XX series codes related to shift solenoids or pressure control).
  3. Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software Glitch:

    • Cause: Sometimes, a software bug or corruption in the TCM can lead to incorrect shift patterns or timing.
    • Action: A dealership or specialized transmission shop can check for available software updates or perform a TCM reset/relearn procedure.
  4. Valve Body Problems:

    • Cause: The valve body is the 'brain' of the automatic transmission, containing a maze of passages and valves that direct fluid. Wear or blockages in the valve body can cause erratic shifting.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the problem worsens, you hear grinding noises, or the car struggles to move.
  • As soon as possible: Given the symptoms, it's highly recommended to have a qualified mechanic or Toyota dealership inspect your vehicle. They can perform a thorough diagnostic scan, check fluid levels and condition, and pinpoint the exact cause. Ignoring transmission issues can lead to more severe and costly repairs down the line. Early diagnosis can save you significant expense.
