2020 Camry Headlights Flickering Intermittently

Vehicle: 2020 Toyota Camry SE

I've got a 2020 Toyota Camry SE, and lately, the headlights have been flickering. It's not constant, but it happens randomly, sometimes one headlight, sometimes both. It's particularly noticeable at night and makes me nervous about driving, especially on unlit roads.

I've checked for loose connections around the bulbs themselves, and everything seems secure. The bulbs are the original LED ones. Could this be a wiring issue, or perhaps something more serious with the headlight assembly or a control module?

It's very inconsistent, which makes it hard to show a mechanic. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent flickering headlights on your 2020 Toyota Camry SE can be a safety concern and points to an electrical issue. Since your Camry uses LED headlights, the troubleshooting steps differ from traditional halogen bulbs.

Potential Causes for LED Headlight Flickering:

  1. Loose Connections or Corroded Wiring: Even if the bulb looks secure, there could be a loose pin connection within the headlight connector or corrosion in the wiring harness leading to the headlight assembly. This can cause intermittent power delivery.
  2. Faulty LED Driver Module: LED headlights often use a separate driver module (ballast) to regulate power. If this module is failing, it can cause flickering or complete failure of the LED unit. This is a common failure point for LED lighting systems.
  3. Grounding Issues: A poor or intermittent ground connection for the headlight circuit can cause voltage fluctuations, leading to flickering.
  4. Body Control Module (BCM) Issue: The BCM controls many electrical functions, including lighting. A fault within the BCM could send inconsistent signals to the headlights, though this is less common for isolated flickering.
  5. Alternator/Voltage Regulator Issue: While less likely to cause only headlight flickering, an unstable voltage supply from the alternator could potentially affect various electrical components. However, this usually manifests as wider electrical issues.

What You Can Check (Limited):

  • Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the headlight for any obvious signs of damage, fraying, or loose connections.
  • Check the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure they are tight.

When to See a Shop: Because your Camry uses integrated LED units and the issue is intermittent, diagnosing this often requires specialized tools to test the power supply, LED driver, and communication with the BCM. It's best to take your vehicle to a Toyota dealership or a reputable auto electrical specialist. They can use diagnostic equipment to monitor voltage and current to the headlights and check for fault codes related to the lighting system, even if a Check Engine Light isn't on. Early diagnosis can prevent a complete headlight failure.
