Vehicle: 2022 Toyota Camry XSE

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a worrying issue with my 2022 Toyota Camry XSE. This morning, while driving to work, both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control System (TCS) warning light suddenly illuminated on my dashboard. There wasn't any noticeable change in braking performance or handling, but it's definitely unsettling.

I tried restarting the car a couple of times, but the lights remain on. I haven't hit any potholes recently or had any work done on the brakes. Could this be a sensor issue, or something more serious? Any advice on what to check first would be great!

It's concerning when your ABS and Traction Control lights illuminate, but it's a relatively common electrical issue. These two systems are interconnected, so a problem with one often triggers a warning for the other. The good news is that it's often a sensor issue rather than a major brake system failure.

Here's a breakdown of what to do and potential causes:

  1. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Your first step should be to use an OBD-II scanner to check for codes. Common codes related to ABS/TCS issues include:
    • C0031 - C0035: Wheel Speed Sensor (Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right) Circuit Malfunction.
    • C0020: ABS Pump Motor Control Circuit.
    • C1201: Engine Control System Malfunction (often a secondary code when ABS/TCS is affected).
  2. Visual Inspection: If you're comfortable, visually inspect each wheel speed sensor and its wiring. Look for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Sometimes, road debris can damage a sensor or its wiring.
  3. Check Brake Fluid Level: While less common for these specific lights, a very low brake fluid level can sometimes trigger warnings.

Common Causes:

  • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most frequent cause. These sensors monitor the rotation of each wheel, and if one fails, the ABS and TCS systems can't function correctly.
  • Damaged Wiring: The wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor can get damaged by road debris or during other maintenance.
  • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually indicated by specific codes related to the module.
  • Tone Ring Damage: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) that the wheel speed sensor reads can become damaged or corroded, leading to incorrect readings.

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly: While your brakes might feel normal, the ABS and Traction Control systems are disabled when these lights are on. This means you won't have anti-lock braking or traction assistance in an emergency braking situation or on slippery surfaces.
  • If Codes Persist: If scanning reveals specific sensor codes, or if you're uncomfortable with the visual inspection, a professional technician can accurately diagnose and replace the faulty component. They have specialized tools to test sensor readings and module functionality.
