Vehicle: 2022 Toyota Corolla LE

Hi all,

I have a 2022 Toyota Corolla LE with the CVT transmission, and it's got about 28,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been hearing a distinct whining noise coming from what sounds like the transmission area, especially when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds. It's not super loud, but it's definitely noticeable and wasn't there before.

Along with the whine, I sometimes feel a slight vibration through the floorboard or steering wheel under acceleration. There's no check engine light, and the car still shifts (or rather, smoothly accelerates) as expected without any jerking. Is this normal for a CVT, or should I be concerned? What could be causing this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A whining noise and slight vibration from the CVT in your 2022 Toyota Corolla LE, especially under acceleration, can be a cause for concern, even without a check engine light. While CVTs can have unique operating sounds, new or worsening noises warrant investigation. Here's what to consider:

  1. Normal CVT Characteristics vs. Problem:

    • Action: Some CVTs naturally produce a slight whine, especially under load, due to the belt/pulley system. However, a new or louder whine, or one accompanied by vibration, is not normal.
    • Cause: The continuous variable nature of the transmission means internal components are constantly adjusting, which can generate some sound. But a change in sound often indicates wear.
  2. CVT Fluid Level and Condition:

    • Action: Although many modern CVTs are considered "sealed for life," checking the fluid level and condition is a critical diagnostic step. This usually requires specialized tools and knowledge, so a dealership or trusted mechanic should perform it.
    • Cause: Low or degraded CVT fluid can lead to increased friction, overheating, and wear on the belt and pulleys, resulting in whining and vibration.
  3. Internal CVT Component Wear:

    • Action: If fluid is optimal, the noise and vibration could indicate wear on internal components like the drive belt, pulleys, or bearings within the transmission. This requires professional diagnosis and potentially internal repair or replacement.
    • Cause: Over time, or due to manufacturing defects, these components can wear down, creating excessive friction, play, and noise.
  4. Torque Converter Issues:

    • Action: The torque converter connects the engine to the CVT. Problems here can manifest as whining, shuddering, or vibration, especially under acceleration.
    • Cause: Internal wear or fluid pressure issues within the torque converter can cause these symptoms.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the noise becomes significantly louder, if you feel any jerking or slipping, or if a check engine light (potentially with codes like P0700 - Transmission Control System Malfunction, or P2764 - Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Low) illuminates.
  • Soon: Even without a check engine light, a new or worsening whine and vibration should be inspected by a Toyota dealership or a transmission specialist. Early diagnosis can prevent more extensive and costly damage to the CVT.
