Vehicle: 2021 Toyota Highlander Limited

Hi all,

I'm having persistent issues with the infotainment system in my 2021 Toyota Highlander Limited. It's the 12.3-inch screen, and it frequently freezes up, becomes unresponsive to touch, and sometimes just reboots itself while I'm driving. This is particularly frustrating when I'm using Apple CarPlay.

When CarPlay is active, it seems to exacerbate the problem. The audio might cut out, the navigation freezes, or the entire screen just goes black for a few seconds before coming back on (or sometimes not at all until I restart the car). I've tried disconnecting my phone, forgetting the car in CarPlay settings, and even doing a soft reset on the infotainment system (holding the power button), but the problems keep returning.

Is this a known bug with the Highlander's system, or could it be a hardware fault? My car has about 30,000 miles. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this before I take it to the dealership?

Infotainment system glitches, freezing, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity issues are not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, and your experience with the 2021 Toyota Highlander Limited's 12.3-inch screen aligns with problems many owners have reported. These issues are typically software-related, but can sometimes stem from hardware or connectivity.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Bugs/Firmware: The most frequent cause is outdated or buggy infotainment system software. Manufacturers often release updates to improve stability, fix bugs, and enhance smartphone integration.
  2. Smartphone Compatibility: While rare, sometimes a specific phone model or iOS/Android version can have compatibility quirks with the vehicle's system.
  3. Cable Issues (for wired CarPlay/Android Auto): If you're using a wired connection, a damaged or low-quality USB cable can cause intermittent connectivity and freezing.
  4. Loose Connections: Less likely, but internal wiring connections to the head unit could be loose.
  5. Hardware Malfunction: In some cases, the head unit itself might have a defect, though this is usually diagnosed after ruling out software.

What to do:

  1. Check for Software Updates: This is your primary step. Toyota frequently releases software updates for their infotainment systems. Contact your dealership and inquire about any available firmware updates for your 2021 Highlander's head unit. They can check your VIN and schedule an appointment to perform the update.
  2. Try a Different Cable/Phone: If you're using a wired connection for CarPlay, try a brand-new, high-quality OEM or MFi-certified (for Apple) USB cable. Also, if possible, test with a different smartphone to rule out phone-specific issues.
  3. Factory Reset: While you've done a soft reset, some systems allow for a deeper factory reset through the settings menu. Be aware this will erase all saved settings, paired devices, and navigation history.
  4. Inspect USB Port: Ensure the USB port itself is clean and free of debris.

When to see a shop:

If software updates, cable changes, and resets don't resolve the issue, it's time to take your Highlander to a Toyota dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for internal errors, test the head unit, and determine if a hardware replacement is necessary. This issue typically does not generate OBD-II engine codes, as it's isolated to the infotainment system.
