2022 Highlander Key Fob Not Detected / Push Button Start Issues

Vehicle: 2022 Toyota Highlander XLE

My 2022 Toyota Highlander XLE is having trouble detecting the key fob. Sometimes I have to press the start button multiple times, or hold the fob right up to the button, just to get the car to start. The "Key Not Detected" warning also pops up frequently on the dash, even when the fob is in the car.

I've already replaced the battery in the key fob with a brand new one, but the problem persists. It's really inconvenient and makes me worried about getting stranded. Is there a common issue with the smart key system in these newer Highlanders, or could it be something else entirely?

Issues with a key fob not being detected on a 2022 Toyota Highlander XLE, especially after replacing the fob battery, can be frustrating and point to a problem within the vehicle's smart key system.

Steps to Diagnose:

  1. Try Your Second Key Fob: If you have a second key fob, test it to see if the problem persists. If the second fob works flawlessly, the issue might still be with the primary fob itself (even with a new battery, internal components can fail).
  2. Check for Interference: Keep other electronic devices (like cell phones, other key fobs, or RFID cards) away from the smart key while attempting to start the vehicle. Sometimes, electronic interference can disrupt the signal.
  3. Inspect the Fob Battery Again: Double-check that the new battery is inserted correctly and is indeed fresh (sometimes new batteries can be dead or low on charge). Ensure good contact with the terminals.

Common Causes:

  • Smart Key System Antenna: The vehicle has multiple antennas that detect the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas (e.g., in the center console, cargo area, or door handles) is faulty or has a loose connection, it can cause detection issues.
  • Smart Key ECU (Electronic Control Unit): This module manages the communication between the key fob and the vehicle's immobilizer and starting system. A fault within the ECU could prevent proper detection.
  • Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring in the smart key system circuit can disrupt signals.
  • Fob Malfunction: Even with a new battery, the key fob itself can develop an internal fault.
  • Vehicle Battery (Less Likely for this specific symptom): A weak 12V car battery can sometimes cause strange electrical issues, but usually, it would affect more than just key fob detection.

When to See a Shop: If trying your second key fob doesn't resolve the issue, and you've confirmed no obvious interference, it's essential to visit a Toyota dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to:

  • Read codes from the Smart Key ECU.
  • Test the signal strength and functionality of the key fob.
  • Check the performance of the smart key antennas.
  • Diagnose the Smart Key ECU itself.

This is not an OBD-II code related issue, but rather a dedicated system diagnosis. Addressing this promptly will prevent potential starting failures.
