AC not blowing cold in 2016 Highlander, weird musty smell

Vehicle: 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited

My 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited's AC isn't blowing cold air anymore, or it's very weak and only slightly cool. To make matters worse, there's a strange, musty, almost mildew-like smell coming through the vents when I first turn it on, especially on humid days. It's getting really hot here in Texas, and I desperately need my AC working properly!

I haven't noticed any leaks under the car, and the fan seems to be blowing fine, just not cold air. Could this be a simple fix, or am I looking at something major? What should I check first?

An AC system that's blowing warm air and emitting a musty smell in your 2016 Toyota Highlander typically points to a few common issues. It's good you're addressing it, especially before the peak of summer.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Refrigerant Leak: The most common reason for an AC not blowing cold is a low refrigerant (Freon) level, usually due to a leak. Over time, seals can dry out, or components like the condenser can be damaged by road debris. A professional AC service can evacuate the system, check for leaks using dye, and recharge it to the correct specification.
  2. Compressor Failure: The AC compressor is the heart of the system, circulating the refrigerant. If it's failing or has seized, it won't be able to pressurize the system. You might hear strange noises (like grinding or squealing) when the AC is on, or it might not engage at all. A quick check is to see if the clutch on the front of the compressor is spinning when the AC is turned on.
  3. Condenser Blockage/Damage: The condenser, usually located in front of the radiator, dissipates heat. If it's clogged with debris (leaves, bugs) or damaged, it won't be able to cool the refrigerant effectively.
  4. Cabin Air Filter: While less likely to cause a complete lack of cold air, a severely clogged cabin air filter can restrict airflow and sometimes contribute to odors. It's an easy and inexpensive item to check and replace yourself.
  5. Evaporator Coil (Musty Smell): The musty smell is almost certainly due to mildew or bacteria growth on the evaporator coil, which is located inside your dashboard. This happens when moisture condenses on the cold coil and doesn't dry out properly. Many shops offer an AC 'odor bomb' service or evaporator cleaning to address this.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you've checked the cabin air filter and the problem persists, or if you suspect a refrigerant leak or compressor issue, it's best to take your Highlander to a certified automotive AC technician. They have the specialized tools to safely diagnose and repair AC systems, including leak detection equipment and refrigerant recovery machines. Ignoring a leak can lead to more costly repairs down the line if the compressor runs dry and fails.
