Vehicle: 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road

Hi all, I've got a 2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road with the automatic transmission, and lately, it's been shifting really rough, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. Sometimes it feels like it's 'hunting' for the right gear at highway speeds, and there's a noticeable hesitation.

My truck has about 65,000 miles on it. I've seen some chatter online about similar issues with these third-generation Tacomas. Is this a known problem? Are there any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or software updates I should be aware of for this specific issue?

I'm hoping it's not a major transmission problem, but the inconsistent shifting is really starting to bother me. Any advice on what to check or ask for at the dealership would be greatly appreciated!

You're not alone, Mark. The shifting characteristics of the 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma (2016-2023 models) automatic transmission have been a common topic of discussion among owners. Many have reported similar experiences with rough shifts, gear hunting, and hesitation, particularly at lower speeds or during acceleration.

  1. Known Issue: This is indeed a widely recognized characteristic, often attributed to the transmission's factory calibration, which prioritizes fuel economy over smooth shifting in some scenarios. The transmission control module (TCM) software can sometimes be overly eager to shift into higher gears.
  2. Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs): Toyota has released several TSBs aimed at addressing these transmission concerns through software updates. The most notable TSBs for the 2018 Tacoma's transmission include:
    • T-SB-0062-18 (Superseded by later TSBs): This TSB specifically addressed transmission shift quality and logic for certain 2016-2018 Tacoma models. It involved a software update to the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM).
    • Later TSBs: There may be subsequent updates that supersede T-SB-0062-18. It's crucial to have your dealership check for the absolute latest applicable software calibration for your specific VIN.
  3. OBD Codes: In most cases of 'gear hunting' or slightly rough shifts, no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) will be stored. If the issue is severe enough to cause a malfunction, you might see codes in the P07xx range (Transmission Control System Malfunction), but this is less common for the typical complaints.

When to See a Shop: You should schedule an appointment with your Toyota dealership. Explain your symptoms clearly and specifically ask them to check for any outstanding TSBs or software updates for your transmission. Ensure they perform a full diagnostic scan and check the transmission fluid level and condition. A software reflash is often the first and most effective step to improve shifting behavior.
