Vehicle: 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Both the ABS warning light and the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard this morning. There was no specific event, like hitting a pothole or hard braking, that seemed to trigger it.

The truck seems to be driving normally, and I haven't noticed any changes in braking or handling. What are the common reasons for both of these lights to come on together in a newer Tacoma? Is there anything I can check myself before taking it to the dealer?

Thanks for the help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and VSC lights illuminate on your 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road, it typically indicates a fault within the anti-lock braking system that also affects the stability control, as VSC relies heavily on ABS sensor data. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS and VSC systems lose crucial data, triggering the warning lights. Common OBD-II codes associated with this are C0200 (Front Right Wheel Speed Sensor), C0205 (Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor), C0210 (Rear Right Wheel Speed Sensor), C0215 (Rear Left Wheel Speed Sensor).
  2. ABS Module Malfunction: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This module processes data from the wheel speed sensors and controls the ABS pump and valves. A fault here will disable both ABS and VSC.
  3. Brake Fluid Level: While usually indicated by a separate brake warning light, an extremely low brake fluid level can sometimes trigger ABS/VSC lights, as the system might interpret it as a fault.
  4. Steering Angle Sensor: The VSC system also uses a steering angle sensor to determine the driver's intended direction. A fault with this sensor can also trigger the VSC light, and sometimes the ABS light as well.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors to any of the aforementioned components can also cause these lights to appear.

When to see a shop:

  • Since these lights indicate a fault in critical safety systems, it's highly recommended to have your Tacoma diagnosed by a professional as soon as possible. While your truck might seem to drive normally, your ABS and VSC systems are likely disabled, meaning you won't have their assistance in emergency braking or slippery conditions.
  • A shop can connect a diagnostic scanner to read specific trouble codes (beyond generic OBD-II codes) from the ABS module, which will pinpoint the exact sensor or component that has failed. This will save time and prevent guesswork.
