Vehicle: 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SE with Technology

Hello ClearTheCode community, I'm experiencing a musty smell coming from the vents in my 2022 VW Atlas Cross Sport SE with Technology. Also, the AC airflow seems a bit weaker than it used to be. The car only has about 30,000 miles on it.

I'm thinking it might be the cabin air filter, but I'm not sure if there's anything else I should be checking. Is the cabin filter easy to replace on this model? And should I also consider replacing the engine air filter at the same time, even if I'm not having performance issues? Any DIY guides or tips would be great!

It sounds like you're on the right track! A musty smell and reduced airflow are classic symptoms of a clogged or dirty cabin air filter. Your 2022 VW Atlas Cross Sport at 30,000 miles is definitely at an age where this filter could be due for replacement.

1. Cabin Air Filter (Pollen Filter):

  • Location: On most Atlas/Atlas Cross Sport models, the cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. You'll typically need to open the glove box, unclip or remove a few screws/dampers, and then the glove box will swing down or detach, revealing the filter housing.
  • Replacement Difficulty: This is generally considered an easy DIY task, requiring basic tools (sometimes just a screwdriver) and about 15-30 minutes of your time. There are many YouTube videos specific to the Atlas/Cross Sport that can walk you through it.
  • Benefits of Replacement:
    • Eliminates Odors: A fresh filter will remove the musty smell, which is often caused by mold, mildew, and trapped debris (leaves, dust, pollen) in the old filter.
    • Restores Airflow: A clean filter allows your HVAC system to push air more efficiently, improving both AC and heat performance.
    • Improves Air Quality: Filters out allergens, dust, and pollutants, making the air inside your vehicle healthier to breathe.

2. Engine Air Filter:

  • Purpose: The engine air filter protects your engine from dust and debris, ensuring clean air for combustion. It does not affect cabin air quality or AC performance.
  • Interval: For your 2022 Atlas Cross Sport, the engine air filter is typically recommended for replacement every 30,000 to 40,000 miles, or sooner if you drive in dusty conditions.
  • Replacement Difficulty: Also an easy DIY. It's usually located in a plastic airbox under the hood and held in place by clips or a few screws.
  • Should you replace it? While it won't fix your musty smell or AC airflow, it's good preventative maintenance. A dirty engine air filter can eventually lead to reduced fuel economy and engine performance. Since you're already doing one filter, it's often convenient to do both.

Additional Tip for Musty Smell: If replacing the cabin air filter doesn't completely eliminate the musty smell, you might have mold or mildew buildup on your AC evaporator core. There are specific AC evaporator cleaning sprays available (often called 'AC refreshers' or 'evaporator cleaners') that you can spray into the system's intake or drain tube to kill the bacteria and fungi causing the odor. Follow product instructions carefully.

When to See a Shop: If replacing both filters and trying an evaporator cleaner doesn't resolve the musty smell or if your AC airflow remains significantly low, there might be a more serious issue like a clogged AC drain, a refrigerant leak, or a failing blower motor. In such cases, a professional diagnosis would be necessary.
