2018 Atlas - ABS, ESC, TPMS Lights ON After Battery Change

Vehicle: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL

Hello everyone, I recently changed the battery in my 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL. Everything seemed fine initially, but now I have multiple warning lights on the dash: ABS, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), and TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System). The steering also feels a bit off, like it's heavier than usual.

I've tried driving it for a bit, hoping they would clear, but no luck. I also checked the tire pressures, and they are all correct. Is there a specific reset procedure I need to follow after a battery disconnect on these Atlas models? Or did I potentially mess something up during the battery swap?

Any guidance on how to get these lights off and restore normal function would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer: It's very common for multiple warning lights like ABS, ESC, and TPMS to illuminate on your 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL after a battery replacement or disconnect. This isn't necessarily a sign of a fault but rather a need for the vehicle's various control modules to re-learn certain parameters.

Here's what likely happened and how to address it:

  1. Steering Angle Sensor Calibration: The most common cause for ABS and ESC lights after a battery change is the loss of calibration for the steering angle sensor. The vehicle needs to know the 'straight ahead' position of the steering wheel. The heavier steering feel also points to this.
    • Reset Procedure: Start the engine. Turn the steering wheel fully to the left, hold for a few seconds. Then turn it fully to the right, hold for a few seconds. Finally, center the steering wheel. Drive the vehicle straight for a short distance (a few hundred feet) at a low speed. This often recalibrates the sensor, and the lights should extinguish.
  2. TPMS System Reset: While you've checked tire pressures, the TPMS system needs to be reset after a battery disconnect to re-learn the current pressures as the baseline.
    • Reset Procedure: Ensure all tires are inflated to the correct pressure (found on the driver's side door jamb). With the ignition on (engine off or running), navigate through your infotainment system or instrument cluster menu to find the TPMS reset option. Select 'Set' or 'Store' the current pressures. Drive for a few minutes, and the light should go off.
  3. Window Auto-Up/Down Calibration: While not related to your current lights, it's also common for auto windows to stop working after a battery change. To recalibrate, roll each window down completely, then hold the switch up until the window is fully closed, continuing to hold for 2-3 seconds after it closes.

When to see a shop:

  • If, after performing the steering angle sensor and TPMS resets, the lights remain illuminated.
  • If you notice any unusual braking behavior, or if the steering remains abnormally heavy and unresponsive.
  • If any new, unexpected warning lights appear that are not related to a simple calibration.
