Vehicle: 2021 Volkswagen Atlas SE with Technology

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a weird electrical issue with my 2021 VW Atlas SE with Technology. The headlights (both low and high beams) have started flickering intermittently, especially noticeable at night. It's not a constant flicker, but more like a brief dimming or stutter. Also, sometimes the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on one side won't turn on, or they'll be much dimmer than the other side.

I've checked the bulbs (they're LEDs, so not easily replaceable by me) and they seem fine visually. No obvious loose connections under the hood. Could this be a headlight control module issue, or perhaps a wiring harness problem? It's quite concerning, especially when driving in the dark.

Any insights or similar experiences with your Atlas?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering headlights and DRL malfunctions on your 2021 VW Atlas SE with Technology are definitely a safety concern and point towards an electrical system fault, most likely within the lighting control system.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): A professional scan tool is crucial here. Fault codes related to lighting modules are often B-codes (Body codes) and can pinpoint the exact issue. Look for codes like B10A0 (Headlight Switch - Implausible Signal), B10A1 (Daytime Running Light - Open Circuit), or specific codes for the left/right headlight modules.
  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: While you've done a visual check, a more thorough inspection of the wiring harnesses leading to the headlights and the headlight control modules (often located near the headlight assembly) is needed. Look for signs of corrosion, fraying, or loose pins in the connectors.
  3. Battery and Ground Connections: Ensure your battery terminals are clean and tight, and check for any loose or corroded ground straps, especially those connected to the chassis or engine block, as poor grounding can cause intermittent electrical issues.
  4. Test Headlight Control Module: Modern LED headlights are often controlled by dedicated modules. A failing module can cause flickering or inconsistent operation. This usually requires specialized diagnostic equipment to test.

Common Causes:

  • Faulty Headlight Control Module (HCM): These modules regulate power to the LED units. A failing HCM can cause flickering, dimming, or complete failure of the lights.
  • Wiring Harness Damage: Rodent damage, chafing, or corrosion in the wiring harness can lead to intermittent connections.
  • Poor Ground Connection: An inadequate ground can cause voltage fluctuations, leading to flickering lights.
  • Internal LED Unit Failure: While less common in newer vehicles, an internal fault within the LED headlight assembly itself could cause these symptoms.
  • Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM oversees many electrical functions, and a fault here could indirectly affect lighting.

When to See a Shop: Given that LED headlights are complex and often integrated with control modules, and the issue affects safety, it's highly recommended to take your Atlas to a VW dealership or a specialist shop as soon as possible. They have the necessary diagnostic tools (like VCDS or ODIS) to read specific fault codes, test the headlight control modules, and accurately diagnose whether it's a wiring issue, a module failure, or an internal fault with the LED assembly. Driving with compromised headlights is dangerous and should be addressed promptly.
