Persistent Squealing Brakes on my 2021 Jetta R-Line

My 2021 VW Jetta R-Line has developed a really annoying squeal from the brakes, mostly at low speeds or when coming to a gentle stop. It's not constant, but it's getting more frequent, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

I've got about 35,000 miles on it, and I haven't had the pads replaced yet. The car stops fine, and there's no grinding, just that high-pitched squeal. It's quite embarrassing.

Is this normal for VW brakes, or should I be worried? What could be causing this, and is it something I can check myself before taking it to a shop?

Summary: For Persistent Squealing Brakes on my 2021 Jetta R-Line, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
