Vehicle: 2019 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T R-Line

Hi everyone,

I'm having some serious issues with my 2019 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T R-Line, which has around 55,000 miles. For the past few weeks, it's been very difficult to start, especially after sitting for a while. It cranks for a long time before finally sputtering to life.

Even worse, it's started stalling occasionally while driving, usually at low speeds or when coming to a stop. The check engine light has come on a few times, but then goes off. I managed to get a scan when it was on, and it showed a P0087 code (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low).

Could this be a failing fuel pump, or maybe a clogged fuel filter? Any insights on what I should investigate first? Thanks for your help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Hard starting, stalling, and a P0087 code (Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low) on your 2019 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T strongly indicate a problem within the fuel delivery system. This is a critical issue that needs immediate attention to prevent further driving hazards and potential engine damage.

Causes:

  1. Low-Pressure Fuel Pump (LPFP) Failure: The LPFP, located in the fuel tank, is responsible for drawing fuel from the tank and sending it to the high-pressure fuel pump. If it's weak or failing, it won't supply enough fuel, leading to low pressure throughout the system.
  2. High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure: The HPFP, driven by the engine, boosts fuel pressure to extremely high levels for direct injection. A failing HPFP is a common cause of P0087, as it can't maintain the required rail pressure.
  3. Clogged Fuel Filter: A severely clogged fuel filter restricts fuel flow, causing the pumps to work harder and potentially leading to insufficient pressure. While less common on newer vehicles with longer service intervals, it's still a possibility.
  4. Fuel Pressure Sensor/Regulator: A faulty fuel pressure sensor might be sending incorrect readings to the ECU, or a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator could be failing to maintain proper pressure.
  5. Fuel Injector Leak: Leaking fuel injectors can cause a drop in fuel rail pressure, especially after the car sits, making it hard to start.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Fuel Filter: While often a dealer-serviced item, a quick check of service records might indicate if it's due for replacement.
  2. Listen for LPFP: When you turn the key to the 'on' position (without starting), you should hear a faint hum from the rear of the car as the LPFP primes.

When to See a Shop:

Given the P0087 code and the stalling, it is crucial to have your Passat inspected by a qualified mechanic or Volkswagen dealership immediately. Driving with insufficient fuel pressure can cause lean conditions, potentially damaging the engine. They will have the specialized tools to:

  • Accurately measure both low-side and high-side fuel pressure.
  • Diagnose whether the LPFP, HPFP, fuel pressure sensor, or regulator is at fault.
  • Check for any other related fault codes that might not trigger the CEL consistently.
  • Inspect fuel injectors for leaks.

Do not delay this repair, as stalling can be dangerous, and prolonged low fuel pressure can lead to more severe engine issues.
