Vehicle: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line

Hi all,

I've been hearing a noticeable clunking or rattling noise coming from the front end of my 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line, especially when I go over bumps or uneven road surfaces. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly.

The car has about 45,000 miles on it. I haven't hit any major potholes recently, and the steering feels normal, not loose. However, the noise is definitely getting more frequent and louder.

Could this be something simple like a sway bar link, or am I looking at something more serious with the struts or control arms? What should I ask my mechanic to check first?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or rattling noise over bumps is a classic symptom of worn or loose suspension components. Given your 2020 Tiguan's mileage, several common culprits could be at play:

  1. Sway Bar End Links:

    • Cause: These small links connect the sway bar to the strut and are a very common source of clunking noises when their ball joints wear out.
    • Inspection: Have a technician check for play in the ball joints of the end links. This is often the first and cheapest component to fail.
  2. Control Arm Bushings:

    • Cause: The rubber bushings in the lower control arms can wear out, leading to excessive movement and clunking, especially over bumps or during braking/acceleration.
    • Inspection: Visually inspect the bushings for cracks, tears, or excessive play. A pry bar can be used by a professional to check for movement.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings:

    • Cause: The strut mount, which attaches the top of the strut to the vehicle's body, can wear out. The bearing within the mount can also fail, causing noise and sometimes affecting steering.
    • Inspection: Look for cracks in the rubber of the strut mount or listen for noise when turning the steering wheel while stationary.
  4. Ball Joints:

    • Cause: The lower ball joint connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle can wear out, causing a clunk and potentially affecting steering and alignment.
    • Inspection: Similar to control arm bushings, checking for play is key.

When to See a Shop: It's important to have this inspected promptly. While a sway bar link might be a minor fix, worn control arm bushings or ball joints can affect steering stability and tire wear. A professional technician can safely lift the vehicle and perform a thorough suspension inspection to accurately diagnose the source of the noise. Driving with severely worn suspension components can compromise handling and safety.
