Vehicle: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL

Hi all,

I'm hearing a noticeable clunking or rattling sound from the front end of my 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It's got about 40,000 miles on it.

The sound seems to be coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more pronounced on the driver's side. It's not constant, only when the suspension is really working. I don't feel any major issues with steering or handling, but the noise is definitely concerning.

Could this be something simple like sway bar links, or am I looking at something more serious like struts? Any advice on what to check first would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking or rattling noise from the front suspension is a common complaint and can be attributed to several components. Given your 2020 Tiguan SEL has 40,000 miles, wear and tear on certain parts is plausible.

Common Causes of Front Suspension Clunking:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common culprit. The bushings or ball joints in the end links can wear out, causing metal-on-metal contact and a clunking sound, especially over bumps or when turning.
  2. Sway Bar Bushings: The main bushings that hold the sway bar to the frame can also wear out, allowing the bar to move and create noise.
  3. Struts/Shock Absorbers: Worn-out struts can cause a variety of noises, including clunking, as the internal components fail or the strut mount bearings degrade. A leaking strut is a clear sign of failure.
  4. Ball Joints: Lower or upper ball joints (depending on suspension design) can wear out, leading to play and clunking noises.
  5. Control Arm Bushings: Worn control arm bushings allow excessive movement of the control arm, resulting in clunks and potentially affecting alignment.
  6. Tie Rod Ends: Inner or outer tie rod ends, if worn, can also contribute to front-end noise and loose steering.

What to Do:

  1. Visual Inspection (Safe Conditions): If you're comfortable, safely lift the front of the vehicle and visually inspect the sway bar links, bushings, and struts for any obvious signs of wear, tears in rubber boots, or leaks.
  2. Shake Test: With the vehicle safely supported, try to shake the wheels at 12 and 6 o'clock (for ball joints) and 3 and 9 o'clock (for tie rods) to check for excessive play.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're not comfortable performing a visual inspection or shake test.
  • If the noise becomes more frequent, louder, or is accompanied by changes in steering feel, handling, or tire wear.
  • Suspension components are critical for safety and vehicle control. A professional technician can accurately diagnose the source of the clunking by performing a thorough inspection of all suspension components, including a road test and a lift inspection.
