Vehicle: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL

Hi all, hoping for some advice here. My 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL, with about 40,000 miles, has developed a noticeable clunking noise from the front end.

It's most prominent when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side, but sometimes I hear it from both sides.

I've checked for anything obvious like loose items in the engine bay, but can't pinpoint it. Any ideas what this could be before I take it in?

A clunking noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a common complaint and usually indicates wear in one or more suspension components. Given your 2020 Tiguan's mileage, here are the most likely culprits:

  1. Sway Bar Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the strut assembly. Their bushings or ball joints can wear out, causing a clunking noise as the suspension articulates.
  2. Sway Bar Bushings: The main bushings that hold the sway bar to the frame can also wear, allowing the bar to move and create noise.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top strut mounts (and their integrated bearings) can wear out, leading to clunking, especially when turning or going over bumps. A worn bearing can also affect steering smoothness.
  4. Lower Control Arm Bushings: These bushings connect the lower control arm to the vehicle frame. When they wear, they can allow excessive movement and produce a clunk or thud.
  5. Ball Joints: The lower ball joint, connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle, can wear out and cause clunking, especially when the wheel moves vertically.
  6. Loose Components: Less common, but ensure all suspension bolts are torqued to specification. Sometimes a loose strut bolt or wheel lug nut can mimic a suspension clunk.

When to see a shop: Suspension issues can affect handling, tire wear, and safety. It's crucial to have a professional technician inspect your Tiguan. They can lift the vehicle, inspect components for play, cracks, or wear, and accurately diagnose the source of the clunking. Driving with worn suspension components can accelerate wear on other parts and potentially compromise vehicle control.
