Vehicle: 2017 Volvo V60 Cross Country T5

Hey everyone,

I've got a weird problem with the headlights and daytime running lights (DRLs) on my 2017 Volvo V60 Cross Country T5. Lately, the driver's side headlight has been flickering intermittently, and sometimes the DRL on that side doesn't come on at all. It's not consistent, which makes it hard to diagnose.

I'm worried it could be a loose connection, a failing bulb (though I thought these were LED and lasted longer), or something more serious with the electrical system. Has anyone experienced flickering lights on their V60 or similar Volvo models? Any ideas on what I should check first?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering or intermittent operation of headlights and DRLs on your 2017 Volvo V60 Cross Country can be a safety concern and points to an electrical issue. Here’s a guide to troubleshooting:

  1. Inspect the Bulb/LED Module:

    • Even if they are LED, individual LEDs or the entire module can fail. Check for any visible damage or discoloration. If your V60 uses Xenon (HID) bulbs, the ballast or igniter could be failing, causing flickering.
  2. Check Wiring and Connections:

    • Carefully inspect the wiring harness leading to the headlight assembly. Look for any signs of fraying, corrosion, or loose connections at the bulb/module socket. A poor ground connection can also cause flickering.
  3. Look for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

    • A diagnostic scan might reveal codes related to the lighting system. Common codes could include:
      • B1000: Headlight Circuit Malfunction (general fault in the headlight circuit).
      • B1001: DRL Circuit Malfunction (specific to the daytime running light circuit).
      • B1002: Headlight Control Module Fault (if your vehicle has a separate control module for the headlights).

Common Causes:

  • Failing Bulb/LED Module: The most straightforward cause.
  • Loose or Corroded Connections: Intermittent contact can cause flickering.
  • Faulty Ballast/Igniter (for Xenon): These components regulate power to the bulb and can fail.
  • Wiring Damage: Rodent damage or wear and tear on the wiring harness.
  • Central Electronic Module (CEM) Issue: The CEM controls many electrical functions, including lighting. A fault here is less common but possible.
  • Software Glitch: Less likely for physical flickering, but can cause DRLs not to activate.

When to See a Shop:

  • If replacing the bulb/module (if applicable) doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If you find no obvious wiring issues.
  • If a diagnostic scan reveals specific fault codes that point to a control module or deeper electrical problem.
  • For complex wiring diagnostics or if the issue is suspected to be with the CEM, which requires specialized tools and expertise.
