Vehicle: 2017 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2017 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription. Over the past few months, the 12V battery seems to drain pretty frequently, especially if the car sits for more than a couple of days. I've had to jump-start it more times than I care to admit.

Along with the battery drain, I consistently get a 'Start/Stop Service Required' message on the dashboard. I've tried charging the battery, but the problem keeps coming back. It's getting to the point where I'm worried about reliability.

Has anyone else with a 2016-2018 XC90 experienced similar battery issues or this specific start/stop message? I'm trying to figure out if this is a known problem or if I have a unique electrical gremlin. Any advice on what to check before heading to the dealer would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're dealing with a common issue for early SPA platform Volvos, particularly the 2016-2018 XC90s. The 'Start/Stop Service Required' message often directly correlates with a weakening or failing 12V main battery, or sometimes the smaller auxiliary battery responsible for the start/stop function.

Here's what's likely happening and what you can do:

  1. Diagnose the Battery:

    • Main 12V Battery: Volvo's sophisticated electrical systems are very sensitive to battery voltage. A battery that's borderline good can cause a cascade of warning messages. Have the main 12V battery load tested. Even if it charges, its capacity might be diminished.
    • Auxiliary Start/Stop Battery: Many 2016-2018 XC90s have a smaller auxiliary battery, usually located near the main battery or under the passenger seat, specifically for the start/stop system. If this battery fails, it will disable start/stop and often trigger the 'Start/Stop Service Required' message. This battery also needs to be checked.
  2. Check for Parasitic Draw:

    • A parasitic draw occurs when components in the vehicle continue to draw power even when the car is off. Common culprits can be infotainment modules (Sensus system), telematics units (TCAM), or faulty relays. A technician can perform a parasitic draw test using an ammeter to identify if something is keeping your electrical system awake.
  3. Software Updates:

    • Volvo has released several software updates over the years to optimize power management and address battery-related issues, especially for the Sensus infotainment system which could sometimes prevent the car from going into a proper 'sleep' mode. Ensure your vehicle's software is up to date.

When to See a Shop: If a simple battery replacement (main or auxiliary) doesn't resolve the issue, or if a parasitic draw test is needed, it's best to take your XC90 to a Volvo dealership or a specialized independent European repair shop. They have the specific diagnostic tools (VIDA) to accurately pinpoint electrical faults, check for relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to battery drain or start/stop issues, and perform necessary software updates. Ignoring persistent battery drain can lead to further electrical system stress and potential damage.
