Vehicle: 2018 Volvo S60 T5

Hi everyone,

I have a 2018 Volvo S60 T5, with around 60,000 miles on the odometer. Lately, especially on colder mornings, it idles very roughly for the first minute or two after starting. It feels like it's struggling to maintain RPMs, and sometimes, it even stalls once or twice before finally settling into a somewhat normal idle.

Once the engine warms up, it drives perfectly fine, no issues at all. There hasn't been a Check Engine Light yet, which is confusing. This problem only seems to happen after the car has been sitting overnight or for several hours.

Has anyone experienced this with their S60 T5 or similar Volvo engine? What could be causing this rough idle and stalling behavior on a cold start? I'm trying to figure out if it's something simple I can check or if it's time for a shop visit.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough idle and stalling specifically on cold starts, especially without an immediate Check Engine Light, can be tricky to diagnose but often points to issues that are more pronounced when the engine is cold. Here are some common culprits for your 2018 Volvo S60 T5:

  1. Spark Plugs: Worn or fouled spark plugs are a very common cause of rough idling and misfires, particularly when cold. They might not be igniting the fuel-air mixture efficiently until the engine warms up. Volvo recommends specific intervals for spark plug replacement; if you're near or past 60,000 miles, it's a good place to start.
  2. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty or failing MAF sensor can send incorrect air intake readings to the engine control unit (ECU), leading to an improper fuel-air mixture, especially during the critical cold start phase. Cleaning the MAF sensor with a specialized cleaner can sometimes resolve this.
  3. PCV System Issues: The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system, if clogged or faulty, can cause vacuum leaks or improper crankcase pressure, leading to rough idle. This is a known area for some Volvo engines.
  4. Fuel System: Issues like a weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or dirty fuel injectors can lead to insufficient fuel delivery, causing the engine to stumble or stall when cold. A fuel pressure test might be necessary.
  5. Engine Software Update: Sometimes, a software update from Volvo can address known cold start or idle stability issues. It's worth checking with a dealer if there are any outstanding updates for your specific model year.

When to see a shop:

  • If cleaning the MAF sensor and checking basic components doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If the problem worsens or a Check Engine Light eventually illuminates, especially with misfire codes (P030X).
  • If you suspect fuel system issues, as these require specialized tools for testing.
  • A professional technician can perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, including checking for pending codes and monitoring live data, to accurately identify the root cause.
