Vehicle: 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country T6

My 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country T6, which has the optional rear air suspension, has started to sag noticeably at the rear, especially after being parked overnight. When I start it up, it usually inflates, but sometimes it takes a while, and the ride feels much harsher than usual.

Recently, I've also had a "Suspension System Service Required" warning message pop up on the dashboard. I'm concerned about driving it like this.

Has anyone else experienced this with their V90 or other Volvo models with air suspension? What was the fix?

The symptoms you're describing with your 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country's rear air suspension – sagging, delayed inflation, harsh ride, and a warning message – are classic indicators of a problem within the air suspension system. This is a known issue for some vehicles equipped with optional air suspension, and it typically points to a leak or a failing component.

Here are the common culprits:

  1. Air Springs (Bags): The most frequent cause is a leak in one or both of the rear air springs. Over time, the rubber can degrade, crack, or develop small punctures, allowing air to escape. This leads to sagging overnight.
  2. Air Compressor: The compressor is responsible for inflating the air springs. If it's failing, it might struggle to maintain pressure, work excessively, or stop working altogether. This can lead to slow inflation or complete system failure.
  3. Air Lines/Valves: Leaks can also occur in the air lines connecting the compressor to the springs, or in the control valves that regulate air flow.
  4. Level Sensors: Faulty height/level sensors can send incorrect readings to the suspension control module, causing the system to miscalculate the required air pressure, leading to incorrect ride height or system errors.

When to see a shop: You should have your vehicle inspected by a Volvo dealership or a specialist shop immediately. Driving with a compromised air suspension can not only affect ride comfort and handling but also potentially damage other suspension components or the compressor if it's forced to overwork. The "Suspension System Service Required" warning often indicates a fault code has been stored, such as C1A00 (general suspension fault) or C1A03 (level sensor fault), which a diagnostic scan tool can retrieve to help pinpoint the exact problem. They can perform a leak test and diagnose the specific faulty component.
