Vehicle: 2018 Volvo XC60 T5

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 with about 75,000 miles on it. I've been doing all the regular maintenance myself or at my trusted independent shop, but I'm starting to wonder about the transmission fluid. Volvo says it's 'lifetime' fluid, which always makes me a bit skeptical.

What are your thoughts on this? Should I be looking to change the transmission fluid soon, or is it truly something that doesn't need attention? I do a mix of city and highway driving, no heavy towing or anything like that.

If it does need changing, is this something a competent DIYer can tackle, or is it best left to the dealership with their special tools? Any advice on fluid type or procedure would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Volvo's "Lifetime" Fluid: Volvo, like many manufacturers, often states that their automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is "lifetime." However, this typically refers to the expected lifespan of the first owner or a certain mileage threshold (e.g., 100,000 miles), not the entire life of the vehicle. Over time, ATF degrades due to heat, friction, and contamination, losing its lubricating and cooling properties. Relying solely on the "lifetime" claim can lead to premature transmission wear.

  2. Recommended Interval: For your 2018 Volvo XC60 T5, a proactive transmission fluid drain and fill is generally recommended every 60,000 to 80,000 miles. This interval can be shortened if you frequently engage in:

    • Heavy stop-and-go city driving
    • Towing or hauling heavy loads
    • Driving in very hot climates
    • Aggressive driving styles This is a preventative measure to extend the life of your transmission and maintain smooth shifting.
  3. DIY vs. Professional:

    • DIY: A simple drain and fill can be done by a competent DIYer. It's crucial to use the correct Volvo-specific fluid (e.g., AW-1 or equivalent, check your owner's manual and vehicle specifications) and ensure the fluid level is checked accurately at the correct temperature using a diagnostic tool or specific procedure. Keep in mind that a single drain and fill will only replace a portion (typically 30-50%) of the total fluid.
    • Professional: A professional shop or dealership can perform a more thorough fluid exchange using specialized equipment, which replaces a higher percentage of the old fluid. This is often preferred for a more complete refresh and ensures the correct fluid type and fill level are maintained.
  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If you're experiencing any transmission issues like harsh shifting, slipping, delayed engagement, or unusual noises, do not attempt a fluid change yourself. A fluid change in an already failing transmission can sometimes exacerbate problems.
    • If you're unsure about the correct fluid type, the precise fill procedure (which often involves specific temperature ranges), or don't have the necessary diagnostic tools, it's always best to consult a Volvo specialist or dealership. They have the specific equipment to monitor fluid temperature for accurate filling.
    • Avoid any "flush" service that uses high pressure, as this can dislodge debris and potentially cause further issues. A fluid exchange or multiple drain-and-fills over time are safer and more effective options.
