Vehicle: 2018 Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design

Hi all, I'm experiencing an issue with my 2018 Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design. The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) has stopped working. I'm getting a 'BLIS System Unavailable' message on the dashboard, and the warning lights in the mirrors aren't illuminating when cars are in my blind spot.

I haven't had any accidents or bumps to the rear bumper where the sensors are located. I've tried cleaning the rear bumper area thoroughly, thinking it might be dirt, but that didn't help. It just suddenly stopped working a few days ago.

Has anyone else encountered this with their XC60? Is there a common fix or something I can check before taking it to the dealership? I rely on that feature quite a bit!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'BLIS System Unavailable' message on your 2018 Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design indicates a fault within the Blind Spot Information System. This system relies on radar sensors located in the rear bumper corners, and various issues can cause it to become inoperative.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check for Obstructions: While you've cleaned the area, ensure there are no subtle obstructions like ice, heavy dirt, or even a sticker covering the sensor areas on the rear bumper corners. Sometimes, even a minor change can affect radar performance.
  2. Restart Vehicle: A simple full vehicle shutdown and restart can sometimes clear temporary electronic glitches. Turn the car off, lock it, wait a few minutes, then restart.
  3. Check Fuses: Although less common for a specific module like BLIS to have its own dedicated fuse that would cause this specific message without other issues, it's worth checking the fuse box diagram in your owner's manual for any fuses related to 'BLIS' or 'Driver Assistance Systems'.

Common Causes:

  • Sensor Malfunction: The radar sensors themselves can fail due to internal defects, moisture ingress, or physical damage (even minor, non-visible impacts).
  • Wiring Issues: A damaged wire or connector leading to the BLIS sensors or control module can interrupt communication.
  • Software Glitch: Less common for a persistent 'unavailable' message, but software issues can sometimes cause modules to go offline.
  • BLIS Control Module Fault: The dedicated control module for the BLIS system could be faulty.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after basic checks and restarts.
  • A Volvo dealership or specialist shop can connect to the car's diagnostic system (VIDA) to read specific fault codes. Common codes for BLIS issues include B11D8 (BLIS Control Module Fault), B11D9 (BLIS Sensor Fault - Left/Right), or communication errors like U0151 (Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module) if related to a broader network issue. These codes will pinpoint the exact component or circuit that is failing.
  • BLIS system repair often involves sensor replacement and recalibration, which requires specialized tools and expertise.
