Vehicle: 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum has been acting up lately. The "Check Engine Light" came on a few days ago, and sometimes I also get a "Reduced Engine Performance" message on the dashboard.

When this happens, the car feels a bit sluggish, especially when I try to accelerate on the highway. It's not constant, but it's definitely noticeable. I've also noticed a slight rough idle a couple of times, but mostly it's the power loss and the warning messages.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar with their XC90 or other modern Volvos? What could be causing this, and is it something I can check myself before taking it to the dealership? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A "Check Engine Light" combined with a "Reduced Engine Performance" message in your 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 Momentum often indicates an issue with the engine's air intake, fuel delivery, or ignition system, which are all monitored by various electrical sensors and modules.

Here's a breakdown of common causes and steps:

  1. Read OBD-II Codes: The first and most crucial step is to get the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) read. Common codes associated with these symptoms in a T6 engine might include:

    • P0236: Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor 'A' Circuit Range/Performance
    • P0238: Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor 'A' Circuit High
    • P0101: Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem
    • P030X: Misfire Detected (where X is the cylinder number) These codes will provide a more specific direction for diagnosis.
  2. Potential Causes:

    • Faulty Boost Pressure Sensor: This is a a common culprit. If the sensor is providing incorrect readings to the Engine Control Module (ECM), the ECM might limit engine power to prevent damage, triggering the "Reduced Engine Performance" message.
    • Vacuum Leaks: Leaks in the intake system can cause incorrect air/fuel mixtures, leading to performance issues and triggering various sensor-related codes.
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Issues: A dirty or failing MAF sensor can send incorrect air intake data, affecting fuel delivery and engine performance.
    • Spark Plugs/Ignition Coils: Worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils can cause misfires, leading to rough idle and reduced power.
    • Wiring or Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or corroded connectors to critical sensors (like the boost pressure sensor, MAF, or O2 sensors) can cause intermittent or consistent fault readings.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Action: If the "Reduced Engine Performance" message is persistent, or if the engine is running very rough, it's best to minimize driving and get it inspected promptly to prevent potential damage.
    • Professional Diagnosis: While reading codes can give you a hint, diagnosing the root cause of these issues often requires specialized tools and expertise. A Volvo-certified technician can perform comprehensive diagnostics, including live data monitoring, to pinpoint the exact faulty component.
    • Safety Concerns: Any issue affecting engine performance can compromise your vehicle's ability to accelerate safely, especially in traffic.

It's recommended to have a professional diagnose and repair the issue to ensure your Volvo operates safely and efficiently.
