2018 XC90 T6 Transmission Fluid Change - DIY or Dealer Only?

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Volvo XC90 T6 with about 75,000 miles on it. I'm trying to be proactive with maintenance, and I'm wondering about the transmission fluid. Volvo often says it's a 'lifetime' fluid, but I've heard mixed opinions on that, especially as the mileage climbs.

Is this something a competent DIYer can tackle, or is it best left to the dealership? I've done fluid changes on other cars before, but I know modern transmissions can be a bit more complex. Are there any special tools or procedures required for the 2018 XC90 T6?

Also, what's the recommended interval for changing the transmission fluid on these models, if any? I want to make sure I'm using the correct fluid type if I do decide to go the DIY route. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Summary: For 2018 XC90 T6 Transmission Fluid Change - DIY or Dealer Only?, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
