Vehicle: 2019 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription

Hey everyone, I'm having a weird problem with my 2019 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription. For the last few days, the car frequently displays 'Key Not Detected' when I try to start it, even though the key fob is right there in the cup holder. I have to place it in the backup reader in the center console to get the car to start.

Also, the passive entry system (where you just touch the door handle to unlock) has stopped working entirely on all doors. I have to use the unlock button on the key fob. I've replaced the battery in both of my key fobs, but it hasn't made any difference.

Could this be an issue with the car's antenna system or something more serious? It's really inconvenient. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

The symptoms you're describing – 'Key Not Detected' and passive entry failure on your 2019 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription, especially after replacing key fob batteries – strongly suggest an issue with the car's keyless entry and start system, specifically the antennas or the Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM).

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Test Both Key Fobs: You've already done this, which helps rule out a single faulty key fob. If both exhibit the same behavior, the problem is likely with the car.
  2. Check for Interference: Ensure there are no strong electromagnetic fields or other electronic devices (e.g., dash cams, radar detectors, phone chargers) near the center console or door handles that could be interfering with the key fob's signal.
  3. Inspect Door Handles: While less common, physical damage or corrosion to the passive entry sensors within the door handles could cause localized issues. However, since all doors and the interior detection are affected, this is less likely to be the primary cause.

Common Causes:

  • Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM) Fault: This module is responsible for communicating with the key fob and managing the passive entry/start functions. A fault here can cause widespread issues.
  • Antenna Malfunction: The car has multiple antennas (interior and exterior) to detect the key fob's presence. A failure in one or more of these antennas, or their wiring, can lead to 'Key Not Detected' messages and passive entry failure.
  • Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to the KVM or its associated antennas can disrupt communication.
  • Software Glitch: A software issue within the KVM or related modules could cause intermittent communication problems.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the problem persists after checking for interference and ensuring key fob batteries are fresh. This issue requires specialized diagnostics.
  • A Volvo dealership or specialist shop can connect to the car's diagnostic system (VIDA) to read specific fault codes. Look for codes related to the KVM or immobilizer system, such as B1A00 (Key Fob Transponder Fault), B1A01 (Immobilizer Antenna Fault), or communication errors like U0167 (Lost Communication With Vehicle Immobilizer Control Module).
  • Diagnosis will involve testing the KVM, individual antennas, and their wiring. Repair often involves replacing the faulty module or antenna, which can be complex due to their integration into the vehicle's body.
