Vehicle: 2020 Volvo S60 T5

Hey everyone,

I've been getting an intermittent "BLIS Service Required" message on my 2020 Volvo S60 T5. It usually pops up on the dashboard and then disappears after a while, sometimes after restarting the car. It seems to happen more frequently when it's raining or very cold outside, but not always.

When the message is active, the BLIS system definitely isn't working – no warning lights in the mirrors. I've tried cleaning the rear bumper area where the sensors are supposed to be, but that hasn't made a consistent difference. Has anyone else experienced this with their S60 or other newer Volvo models? Any ideas on what might be causing it before I take it to the dealership?

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The "BLIS Service Required" message on your 2020 Volvo S60 T5 indicates an issue with the Blind Spot Information System. This system relies on radar sensors, typically located in the rear bumper, and a control module to function correctly. Intermittent issues often point to environmental factors or marginal electrical connections.

Here's what could be causing it and what you can do:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Contamination:
    • Cause: Even after cleaning, road grime, ice, or heavy rain can temporarily block the radar signal. The sensors are usually behind the bumper cover, but severe buildup on the cover itself can interfere.
    • Action: Ensure the entire rear bumper area, especially the corners, is free of dirt, snow, or ice. Sometimes a car wash isn't enough; a thorough manual wipe down might be needed.
  2. Wiring or Connector Issues:
    • Cause: The wiring harness connecting the BLIS sensors to the control module can develop issues. Corrosion in connectors, a loose pin, or even a damaged wire (especially in areas exposed to road debris) can cause intermittent faults, particularly with temperature changes or vibrations.
    • Action: This usually requires professional inspection. A technician can check the continuity and resistance of the wiring and connectors.
  3. Faulty BLIS Sensor or Module:
    • Cause: One of the radar sensors or the BLIS control module itself could be failing. Intermittent failure is common before a complete breakdown.
    • Diagnostics: A diagnostic scan tool (like Volvo's VIDA system) would likely reveal specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the BLIS system. Common codes might include B14XX series codes (e.g., B1400, B1401, B1402) indicating issues with the left or right BLIS sensor, or communication errors.
  4. Software Glitch:
    • Cause: Less common, but sometimes a software bug or corruption in the vehicle's infotainment or body control module can cause sensor systems to misreport.
    • Action: A dealership can check for and apply any available software updates for your vehicle's modules.

When to See a Shop:

Given the intermittent nature and the safety aspect of the BLIS system, it's recommended to have your Volvo S60 inspected by a qualified technician or a Volvo dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic tools to read the specific BLIS DTCs, pinpoint the exact sensor or module at fault, and perform necessary repairs or software updates. Ignoring the issue could lead to a complete failure of the system, which is a valuable safety feature.
